Weekend / Smartphone / Power Outage ---- It was supposed to be my weekend escape, away from all expectations and the people who clung to them. At least, that's how it had started, when I threw my suitcase into the corner and collapsed onto the much too hard hotel bed. ---- For the first time in four months, I had fallen asleep without having to fight for every inch I hoped to drift into dreams. Now I opened my sticky eyes and groped helplessly for my smartphone, which had somehow slipped into the gap between the mattress and the bed frame. Clicking was unsuccessful; the screen remained dark. Annoyed, I tried again until I had a change of heart. It would only contain messages I didn't intend to answer anyway.
Instead, I reached for the switch of the bedside lamp. Only when that click also faded away without further effect did I notice the all-encompassing silence that threatened to engulf my ears and was only dispelled by the rushing of my blood.
A power outage, of all times. Cursing, I crawled out of bed and tripped over my suitcase on the way to the window. My hands got caught in the curtains, which threatened to wrap around me like cobwebs, but I managed to pull them apart instead of just pulling them down.
At first I thought there must be a blind darkening the window, but I couldn't feel anything, even when I grasped the handle and threw the window open. The cool night air brushed against my skin, my searching fingers, and carried a whiff of exhaust fumes into the small room.
"Hello?" I called out tentatively, but my cry was lost in the velvety black sky that had swallowed the stars, like a pillow swallowing the diamonds that had adorned it.
In blind panic, I fought my way back across the room, bumping into the wardrobe and then the doorknob, completely oblivious to the pain. For a breathless second, I thought I was trapped, then I staggered out into the empty hallway, my footsteps muffled by the heavy carpet.
Silence reigned here as well, and I began to realize that I was alone.
