On the evening of Friday, May 8th, at the Berneri Club in Reggio Emilia, approximately thirty-five people attended a meeting with lawyers from the Bologna-based Mutual Aid Association for the Right to Expression. The meeting focused on repression in general, and specifically on the latest security decree, organized by FAI Reggiana and Area Libertaria, entitled "They Taught Us to Be Amazed at People Who Steal Bread - Security Madness and Systematic Repression."
After a brief introduction to the repressive situation in general, the lawyers pointed out that the government is applying an "enemy's criminal law," which no longer targets the crime committed, but rather the person for who they are: an opponent, a migrant, or in any case "non-aligned." They then outlined the provisions contained in this latest decree, emphasizing that many of them were inserted in pursuit of news stories for mere propaganda purposes, but above all, highlighting the increasing impunity and discretion enjoyed by police forces. In particular, administrative measures were clarified and discussed, becoming increasingly pervasive, discretionary, and burdensome in their consequences for those affected, granting police officers the power to arrest anyone with virtually no limits, simply on suspicion or based on previous reports. The evening also featured local social groups, already affected by repression for their activities, who contributed to the discussions and the resulting debate.
In closing, it was noted that this was the first event in a campaign against repression, policies, and the increasingly widespread security mentality, which will continue in the coming months.
