Noureddine Bitat, 59 has salt and pepper short hair. He wears a red collared Hilfiger T-shirt that reads NY with red, while and blue trim. He holds out his broken glasses with his right hand. Out of focus behind is the silhouette of a man on a computer at a desk.

Dear New Yorkers,

Noureddine Bitat watched in horror as riled-up Knicks fans shattered his yellow taxi’s windshield, ripped out its meter and stomped on its roof and hood following Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

“I’m thinking of quitting,” the 59-year-old Algerian cabbie told The City Reporter in a tear-filled interview Friday through an Arabic translator. “Once I saw the cab, it was very traumatic.”

The damage to Bitat’s taxi featured in a spate of rowdy, sometimes violent behavior around the Finals, especially after the Knicks’ championship win Saturday night.

Now, he’s getting some support from the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, Bronx rapper French Montana and Canadian TikTok star Zachery Dereniowski, including through a GoFundMe aimed at raising $100,000 to help Bitat recover financially while he remains out of work.

“The most meaningful gesture has been a show of care,” he said. “The fact that they are praying for me and caring for me is what has meant the world to me.”
