September Membership Drive - Your Gift Matched Through 9/30 Dear friends, I am deeply troubled by the global community’s indifferent response to refugees who are fleeing persecution and violence in Syria, Iraq and other conflict affected countries. That’s why – when I heard about Amnesty’s Membership Drive – I knew I had to be part of it. People of conscience must stand together in support of refugees. Will you join me? Children, the sick, and the elderly have been especially hard hit. Amnesty crisis investigators met Sarif, a blind refugee from Iraq, during their research mission to Greece. Sarif’s son told them she is more than 100 years old. He carried her on his back all the way to Turkey to escape the armed group calling itself Islamic State. She has been living in a tent in northern Greece since February. The world has been gripped by heart-wrenching stories of refugees like Sarif. Now, we must spur world leaders to act in the face of the largest refugee crisis the world has seen since World War II. Your generous contribution will help Amnesty: Send crisis investigators to Syria; to neighboring countries Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey; and to Europe to find out what’s actually happening on the ground. Collect and publicize refugees’ stories to stop fear mongering and to maintain public support for a compassionate and human rights-centered response to the crisis. Push lawmakers to do more to help asylum-seekers and ensure fair and transparent asylum processes. Launch media and membership mobilization campaigns to keep this issue front and center to ensure that world leaders respond robustly and effectively. Amnesty has a long history working for refugees’ rights, and they take no money from corporations or governments for their research or campaign work.
