Leonardo Barcellos de Albuquerque, from Brazil, is about to release his fourth music album, and he’s training for bocha, a tossing game that’s a Paralympic sport.
Yet by the end of this year, Leonardo, 25, will likely be living in an Institution. He has muscular dystrophy, a progressive condition leading to severe muscle degeneration. And his mother, Celia, who is 60, suffers from severe back pain and is not strong enough to lift or move him.
They both want him to live at home. But for this to happen, they’d need support from Brazil’s government.
Leonardo is not alone. Thousands of children and adults with disabilities in Brazil are needlessly confined to institutions, where they may face neglect and abuse.
