Dear friends,
In what is possibly an extreme manifestation of unusual, zoochotic behavior (or zoochosis), the Indianapolis Zoo's African lion Zuri killed her mate, Nyack, by suffocating him. This happened on the zoo's watch, while both were locked in captivity.
Zuri and Nyack had been mates for eight years, sharing housing and having three cubs together. According to zoo logs, the lions had never been aggressive with each other.
Lion experts seem baffled by this incident. In the wild, packs of females may wound a strange male, but they don't kill him. While there are many theories about what could have caused Zuri to kill her mate, one thing is clear... A life in captivity is equivalent to long-term torture for intelligent, sensitive animals.
Zoos claim to play an important role in conservation and education, but the reality is that keeping animals in captivity is unnatural and cruel. Being forced to live in too-small enclosures can make animals exhibit unusual, zoochotic behavior like pacing, head bobbing, sitting motionless — and, perhaps, even murdering their longtime mates.
Thank you for your compassion,
