Strike and Govt Lockdown in Kashmir Amid Anger Over Killings of Civilians

A strike and a security clampdown shut down most of Indian-administered Kashmir on Sunday, a day after at least seven civilians were killed and over three dozen injured when government forces fired at protesters following a gunbattle that left three rebels and a soldier dead.
Residents say troops sprayed gunfire directly into the crowds and killed at least two more civilians. A statement from police said they regretted the killings, but the protesters had come “dangerously close” to the fighting.
Armed police and soldiers in riot gear were deployed across the region anticipating protests. Authorities stopped train services and cut cellphone internet in some areas, and reduced connection speeds in other parts of the Kashmir Valley, a government tactic to prevent demonstrations from being organized and stop the dissemination of videos by Kashmiris.
