Dear friends,
Democracies are built on elections. To have a truly democratic nation, the people must have the freedom and the ability to choose their representatives. That's why voting is one of the most important rights we have. It should be convenient and easy for all citizens to participate.
But so far, politicians don't seem to have gotten the memo. Election Day is the designated time when we choose our new representatives, so it should obviously be a special day, specifically set aside for all to exercise their right to vote. But for 230 years, Election Day has been treated as just another Tuesday, and most people struggle to find time to cast their ballot.
If Congress were to create a special holiday to honor this bi-annual occasion, most employers would be required to give workers the day off to vote. It would also symbolically show that we value one of the most fundamental elements of our representational government.
The United States still recognizes "Columbus Day" as a holiday, even though he was a colonizer who actively tortured, raped, and killed Native Americans — including young girls. Why would the government still celebrate Columbus Day, but not the day that we the people select our democratically-elected government?
With the Democratic primaries coming up, people across the country will be coming together to vote for a presidential candidate to run against the incumbent, Donald Trump. Yet once the party chooses its nominee, millions of people might not be able to vote for that candidate in November's general election — and all just because of scheduling difficulties.
Politicians always brag about how much they love the U.S. Constitution and democracy. They need to prove it. Tell Congress to make Election Day a federal holiday!
Thank you for all that you do,
