In Malawi, Women Can Be Stripped of Their Own Property If Their Husband Dies. Urge the Government to Change This Unjust Custom. Sign Now Dear friends, Salome Nkalawire is a young Malawian woman. She has raised four beautiful children, who in turn loved helping their parents work on the farm they created on their little plot of land. But when her husband and one of her sons died, everything changed. Per local customs, she was stripped of her right to own land and could no longer claim to be part of her husband's family. She was left with nothing. In 2016, Malawian women thought they had finally gotten the protection they deserved when lawmakers passed a bill recognizing women's customary land rights. Yet to this day, the government seems to be dragging its feet when it comes to implementing this law. Women are still routinely discriminated against and stripped of their property. Some women are even married off as children, while widows are frequently given away as "inheritance" to their late husband's relatives. This archaic treatment must stop. Women in Malawi need to be granted solid land rights so they can survive, whatever the state of their family!
