The anger and frustration driving mass protests across the United States is about more than the brutal actions of the police officers who killed George Floyd. It’s about a law enforcement system that does not value all people equally and sacrifices the lives and well-being of black people as a result.
Additionally, President Trump is filling Washington, DC, and other cities with federal law enforcement officers ill-prepared for handling street protests. This seems more about Trump trying to look strong than ensuring peaceful protests. It’s a recipe for disaster.
As the Covid-19 pandemic rocks the United States, the black community has been heaviest hit. These communities were already behind the rest of the country in terms of access to health care and having underlying health issues linked to race and class.
Roughly 100 years ago in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a white mob attacked a prosperous black neighborhood, killing several hundred black people and torching more than 1,200 black-owned homes. Survivors of the massacre and their descendants are still suffering the consequences.
And to stop profound discrimination and brutality in policing. The US national, state, and local governments should enact meaningful police accountability measures and drastically reduce unnecessary arrests.
