On September 21, 2018, Zak Costopoulos / Zackie Oh is murdered in the center of
Athens! after being lynched by reputable citizens and police officers. Threeyears later, the civil justice has not done the slightest thing to punish the
perpetrators, for a murder that anyone can see by clicking "play" in the video.
The owner of the jewelry store and the broker who were furiously kicking Zak are
free, while the police officers who continued to beat the blood-soaked Zak and
then handcuffed him are still on duty. The competent prosecutor referred to trial
after a year the 2 shopkeepers and 4 policemen for the crime of fatal bodily
injury and not for murder with deceit or possible deceit. No charges have been
filed against other civilians, and the video clearly shows that they used
physical violence against Zak. No charges were brought against the other 5 police
officers present at the attack, nor against the EKAB man who did not follow the
protocol, ie did not provide the necessary care to the victim and did nothing to
protect the bloodied and unable to react. in the deadly attacks he received,
Jacques Costopoulos.
It is worth mentioning the provocative attitude held by both the 2 defendants and
the Hellenic Police. Specifically, when the head of the Athens police officers,
Demosthenes Pakos, was asked if he considered that excessive force had been used
in the treatment of Zak Costopoulos by the police, he replied "This is the
practice. Whoever likes it. Anyone who does not like... ", while the general
secretary of the Special Guards Stratos Mavroidakos added:" They do their job
excellently. "The policeman will not go with a rose to handcuff someone." The 2
owners were spreading false information about the incident. The broker, in fact,
started a relentless fight to tarnish Jacques on social media. He went so far as
to hit a journalist of the newspaper "Labor Solidarity",
From the very first moment, attempts were made to cover up the murder by cops
and the media. News bulletins and broadcasts frantically tried to give Jacques'
killers the alibi of self-defense. Day and night he was portrayed as a would-be
robber and drug addict trying to activate the conservative reflexes of racism
towards drug addicts, in order to politically defend the murder from the side of
the government. Their vulgarity even went so far as to call viewers during a live
show to vote on whether the jeweler did the right thing. They spread blatant
lies, such as that he was holding a knife, that he tried to attack EKAB rescuers
with broken glass, that he died from a drug overdose or that he died from an
injury caused by the windows he broke. It is noteworthy that the cops never
bothered to seal the scene of the crime, as is always the case, thus leaving the
jeweler to clear possible evidence.
All these allegations turned out to be false. As seen in the video, Jacques was
not holding a knife. He did not try to steal, as no fingerprints were found on
either the cash register or the merchandise of the store. He was not a threat to
anyone as he could not even stand up. Also according to the conclusion of the
toxicological examinations, no drugs were found that could be related to his
death. The medical examiner in the case confirmed the exact cause of death, Zak's
murder more precisely, which according to his conclusion were "ischemic-type
myocardial lesions, causally associated with the multiple injuries inflicted by
the deceased".
It is important for the world of struggle, the exploited and the oppressed, to
resist and fight against the social cannibalism cultivated by the capitalist
system. The system for which private property is considered more important than
human life. We have to crush these perceptions and attitudes in the whole social
field in which we move and live: on the streets, at work, in schools and
colleges, in our neighborhoods. To respond with class unity and solidarity among
others from below to all kinds of Mr. Pantelides who believe that their property
is worth more than human life. To those who find it reasonable to die because
they stole or tried to steal, or because they are gay, drug addict, immigrant or
anything that goes beyond their standards.
We are committed to continuing the struggle of Zak Costopoulos, an active
activist for the rights of the lgbtqia + community and HIV-positive people,
against racism, social marginalization, patriarchy, conservatism and the social
emphasis nurtured by state and capitalist capitalism. Let us, therefore, thicken
the lines of social and class struggles and fight collectively for the
revolutionary transformation of the existing social and productive relations, for
a society of freedom, equality and solidarity, in order to get rid of the
diseased remnants of the capitalist system once and for all.
