The right for LGBT+ people to come together to celebrate Pride is still under attack.

Earlier this month, I was in Belgrade, Serbia, to deliver a 30,000 strong petition to the government, asking them to overturn a ban on EuroPride 2022.

The ban had been imposed following demonstrations by extreme right-wing and Christian groups who wanted to silence peaceful celebration and protest by LGBT+ people.

I am immensely proud to let you know that this petition contributed to the ban on Pride being overturned.

All Out members from 123 countries stood in solidarity with LGBT+ people in Serbia to demand the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. And it worked!

Serbia is just one of countless places where bullies attempt to deny LGBT+ people the right to express themselves and to advocate for their rights. In Turkey, Russia, Uganda, Ghana, and many other places, our precious right to assemble and protest is violated.

Our fight back continues, but we can’t do it alone. We urgently need your help to run campaigns, like the one in Serbia, that can actually beat the bullies.

In Belgrade, I personally saw the impact that a successful campaign like this can have. The day after the successful overturning of the ban, I joined Serbian LGBT+ people to march with love, joy, and pride. It was a historic moment, powering the local movement with confidence and determination.

Counter protesters thrust crucifixes into our faces, the churches unsuccessfully tried to drown us out with their bells, neo-Nazis rioted in the streets, hunting LGBT+ people.

But with the support of the global All Out community, we had won the right to be who we are. The ban had been overturned and the police were therefore protecting us. We went out into the cold, pouring rain. We claimed the streets. We danced, we laughed, and we experienced the pure joy of coming together as a community.

So many other LGBT+ communities around the world could do the same with powerful global support we just mobilized for Serbia. And I’m convinced that – with your help – we can achieve many more marvelous victories like this.
