On Monday, a strong earthquake shook the border region of the Syrian and Turkish
states and the autonomous administrative region of north-eastern Syria, betterknown as Rojava. Entire blocks of flats have collapsed in many cities.Infrastructure was destroyed en masse. According to current information, a highfour-digit number of people lost their lives. Tens of thousands were injured.Hundreds of thousands have become homeless. It can be assumed that the number ofvictims will continue to rise significantly, as the rescue work is progressingslowly or not at all. ---- This is mainly due to the fact that the Turkish stateis sending almost no help while people in the affected areas are fighting fortheir lives, that of their relatives, neighbors and acquaintances. The affectedareas are mainly inhabited by Kurds. It seems to be a conscious decision by thefascist Turkish state to leave the Kurds it hates to fend for themselves. At thesame time, Turkish military operations against Rojava continue. The earthquake is a natural disaster. But for the Turkish state and capitalistcorporations to build houses that simply collapse in one of the world's mostearthquake-stricken regions is a conscious decision. The fact that the state doesnot provide aid but sends bombs is a conscious political decision that costs andwill cost human lives. Once again, the murderous nature of the Erdogan regime isevident.Because the state does not help, people help themselves. The solidarity frombelow is enormous. That gives hope, but it's still far too little. The peopleaffected urgently need help from outside, which is also reported to us bycomrades from Turkey. It is impressive how much willingness to help is alreadyshowing in Germany. Acceptance points for donations have spontaneously sprung upeverywhere, often coordinated by people with families in the affected areas.Solidarity from below against the catastrophe is also international. All of thisgives hope.We would like to express our deepest sympathy to those affected and theirfamilies, and yet we know that words alone cannot make up for the grief of manyof our colleagues, neighbors and classmates. We would therefore like to call onyou to support the relief efforts on site and also share the call for donationsfrom the Kurdish Crescent, which can now use every cent for on-site help.
