Antonio Mazzeo will end up on trial for contesting the presence of the military
in the school where he teaches. We express our sincere sympathy to him. Below isthe press release issued by the CUB School University Research. ---- In commonperception, the state of war is traced back to the fact that formally we are atwar, that the army is deployed at the front and that it fights. In reality war isa more complex and pervasive fact regarding our lives and our material conditions---- Suffice it to think, in this regard, of the extremely significant number of"peace operations" in which "our" army is engaged in many countries, of thegrowth in military spending, of the nationalist and militarist propaganda that isheavily imposed on us, of the sending of weapons in Ukraine. On the other hand, the intertwining of external and internal war, the reduction of political andtrade union freedoms, the use of the army directly as a function of public ordershould not be underestimated. This drift, and the thing is - from the point ofview of those who impose it - "inevitable", does not spare the school: themilitaristic and nationalist indoctrination of the younger generations isabsolutely functional, and for this very reason it must be fought with determination.Pacifist teacher on trialIn this regard, it is enough to consider what is happening in Messina these days:my colleague Antonio Mazzeo, a pacifist teacher, having taken a position on thecontroversies that followed the fact that on 21 October 2020 in front of theentrance to the primary school of Paradiso di Messina the children and theirparents found themselves facing two soldiers of the "Aosta" Mechanized Brigade,in combat uniform, weapons on their belts and batons in their hands; the twosoldiers had been sent to school (still today it is not known exactly by whom) toprevent "dangerous" gatherings but their presence generated scenes of terror andtears among the girls and boys; the parents strongly protested; the city pressorgans were informed and they promptly relaunched what happened in thecomprehensive institute; now Antonio Mazzeo is on trial for slander for havingpublicly criticized the choice of the school director. In fact, the managerclaimed the correctness of this initiative, on the other hand it is a widespreadpractice to bring classes, starting from primary school, to visit the barracksand military ceremonies that praise the combatants of the wars that have involvedItaly. The Cub School, University and Research strongly supports the currentmobilizations of teachers and all male and female school workers, students, parents, so that the school stands up for peace and the right to criticize thedominant propaganda, in the knowledge that the interests of male and femaleworkers, the defense of wages and welfare, increasingly heavily attacked, alsopass through opposition to military spending and war.For the CUB School University Research, the National CoordinatorWhat follows is the press release following the important conference in Gela onEni and war, of which you can read the entire page 7 dedicated to the event withinsights and summaries of the main reports.Conference in Gela on "ENI's new energy and military colonialism".Promoted by the NO MUOS Movement, the Antimilitarist Assembly and the NoIncinerator Committee, the conference on ENI's new energy and militarycolonialism took place on Saturday 10 December at the Municipal Art Gallery of Gela.In front of a room full of the public and activists of the various promoting andadhering organizations and associations, moderated by Nicolò Distefano of Noincinerator, the works began with the report by Daniele Ratti of theanti-militarist Assembly of Milan, centered on the equation "energy = profit =war". Italy is the second country in the world for military missions abroad (54)of which half in Africa. The map of the missions coincides for 98% with the oiland gas extraction areas and the role of ENI is the driving force. After havingmade a geopolitical picture of Italian energy interests in the so-called"enlarged Mediterranean", Ratti focused on the presence of ENI at the top of theMinistry of Foreign Affairs and on its function as "guide" of the Ministry ofDefence.Andrea Turco, environmental journalist and member of A Sud has defined the searchfor alternative energy supplies to Russia only the "change of the drug dealer".He then focused on the local situation: the existing gas pipeline, Green Stream, from Libya to Gela, employs just 12 people; the Argo Cassiopea is underconstruction with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters of gas to be transferredto energy-intensive companies in the North, while the third decided for Gela isthe Melita Pipeline which will have to supply Malta. These are extractivist policies that only exacerbate the devastation of theterritory. The reclamation of the SIN area (Site of National Interest)Gela-Niscemi-Butera established in 1998, after 24 years are certified at 1% onland and zero at sea. While the steady stream of deaths among former refineryworkers continues.Pippo Gurrieri, on behalf of the NO MUOS Movement, compared the two cities ofGela and Niscemi and the disasters they share. He rattled off the data of deathsfrom malignant tumors, those of newborn malformations (1 child for every 166inhabitants in Gela) and the little known data on the Niscemese victims probablycaused by the electromagnetic emissions of the US base. The two cities have manydisasters in common, including being both capitals, one of pollution, tumors andbirth defects and the other of war which is managed every day by MUOS. Even thedemographic data compared offer a picture of a strong economic and social crisisunderway. It is necessary, said Gurrieri, to start from these dramatic anddrastic aspects to implement the right answers, involving the local populations.Erika Garozzo, of the Network of Sicilian territorial committees highlighted howthe questions raised are questions of decision-making and colonialism. ENI'sprojects are colonial in nature; the Italian State has adopted regulations thatallow local authorities to be bypassed on fundamental issues; a form ofdomination against which we must revolt.Paolo Scicolone, of No incinerator, contested the decision of the Region toestablish the second incinerator in Gela (the one for western Sicily), where thegarbage produced for 70% in Palermo will have to be transferred, with high risksof pollution, given that most are undifferentiated. He denounced the occupationalblackmail that is being done to acquire consent to the project, and he focused onthe lack of land reclamation and the high levels of existing contamination, especially in agriculture. After the interventions, an animated debate took place with over a dozeninterventions, with other ideas and complaints from other contexts, such as theSyracuse area. The intervention of a senator of the 5 Star Movement, whosvirgolato on military issues focusing on environmental ones, on which he offeredhimself as an institutional bank, induced some NO MUOS activists and DanieleRatti himself to reply on the responsibilities of the entire political class indecisions on military expenditure and war policies and on the strongmilitarization of Sicily which represents a mortgage on any possibility of adifferent future. Hence the need to move from below to counter these policies andachieve the demilitarization of our territories.Movement NO MOVEhttps://www.sicilialibertaria.it/_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
