WORLD WORLDWIDE USA NewYork NY NewYorkCity NYC thecity THECITY THE CITY - Scoop: Bankruptcy Filing Buys P.S. 64 Owner Time in Epic Battle for CHARAS

Dear New Yorkers,

It’s the latest twist in the decades-long saga of the derelict former school building in the East Village known as CHARAS: As it went up for auction, its owner filed for bankruptcy, halting the sale.

It’s been a quarter-century since Gregg Singer bought what was then a beloved Puerto Rican-led community center from the Giuliani administration. Since then, the building has remained empty as locals, who strenuously protested its sale, have fought each attempt Singer has made to redevelop it.

Yesterday was no different. Outside the planned foreclosure auction at a hotel in Midtown, advocates amassed on the sidewalk, banging drums and brandishing signs demanding that the beloved building be returned to East Villagers.

“We're more than 20 years in and we have not given up,” said Anne Edris, one of the protesters outside. “That says a lot right there.”

Some other items of note:

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul vowed to force state-licensed hospitals to bring back 850 psychiatric beds taken offline at the start of the pandemic. Her administration sent letters to 50 hospitals in the state — including 25 in New York City — threatening to issue fines if the beds are not back in use by April 1. Hospitals say they need more money and staff to make it happen.

  • Mets owner Steve Cohen wants to build on Citi Field’s parking lot. A bill introduced by a Queens state lawmaker Wednesday would help him do just that.

  • We’re just getting started covering the 2023 City Council elections (Primary Day is June 27!) and we want to make our reporting better with your help. Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Thursday's Weather Rating: 6/10. More clouds than peeks of sunshine today, with intermittent periods of showers as well. There will be some breaks - and it'll actually be fairly nice out there when it's not raining. The vibes are a bit unsettled, but not terrible!

THE KICKER: Another slaughterhouse runaway will head to early retirement at a tri-state animal sanctuary. The calf who got loose in Canarsie earlier this week will live out her days in New Jersey, Gothamist reported, joining a gang of others who hooved it to freedom: a bull from Jamaica, Queens, a pregnant cow who jumped from a truck and a 9-month-old cow found in Flushing Meadow-Corona Park. The latest calf does not yet have a name, but may we suggest Flossy?

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Thursday.

Love,
THE CITY
