WORLD WORLDWIDE USA NewYork NY NewYorkCity NYC thecity THE CITY - THE CITY Scoop: Food Delivery Workers Veer Into Warfare Over Breakthrough Wage Proposal

Dear New Yorkers,

Last fall, Los Deliveristas Unidos were celebrating what appeared to be their finest moment.

The upstart group of food delivery workers who rocketed into political influence had just secured a proposed minimum pay standard, the first of its kind in the nation. They had also successfully pushed for other newly passed laws tackling some of their biggest issues on the job.

In the months since, however, the organization and the Workers Justice Center — the nonprofit worker center that served as a parent group for Los Deliveristas Unidos — have veered into warfare, and many of their gains have slipped.

The pay standard has evaporated. Delivery leaders and staff have left WJC. And some workers have aligned with app giants Uber and DoorDash — their previous adversaries — in saying that the new minimum wage scheme could make it harder for them to get work.

Some other items of note:
  • Hundreds of people howling invective past each other. An overwhelming police presence. Rep. George Santos surrounded by dozens of photographers. The scene outside Manhattan Criminal Court yesterday was a cartoonish circus. Here’s what our reporters saw — and heard — outside 100 Centre St. as the former president was arraigned.

  • One of those reporters tells us more about that scene on THE CITY’s FAQ NYC podcast, with an “instant vintage” report from outside the courthouse Tuesday morning — and as life around the rest of New York City continued pretty much as usual. Listen here.

  • As he went through the court process, Donald Trump became one of roughly 31,000 people arraigned for felonies in dreary courtrooms across New York state each year. But for Trump, it was a very different experience, replete with motorcade, quick processing and no handcuffs. Our partners at the Marshall Project spoke to 11 people about their own arraignment process: typically a haze of crowded cells, moldy sandwiches and disorientation.

  • New Yorkers have until May 31 to submit the names of loved ones to MISSING THEM, THE CITY’s COVID-19 memorial project: Send a note to memorial@thecity.nyc. May 31 is also the last day to see the MISSING THEM photo exhibit in The Bronx and Queens.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Wednesday’s Weather Rating: 4/10. It is Wednesday my dudes. And today, a backdoor cold front had decided to crash our spring party. High temps are back in the upper 50s with onshore flow, clouds and patches of drizzle. The vibes are unsettled once again!

THE KICKER: The couple who got married at the City Clerk’s office yesterday — in the middle of the Trump media circus unintentionally — met four years ago at LaGuardia Community College. The groom, Peter Don, proposed Friday and tied the knot with bride Khalia Beckford on Tuesday. Standing steps away from crowds of journalists and onlookers, Beckford said: “It’s a moment, and it’s not going to ruin my big day. The cameras [are] for me. Everyone came for me.”

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Wednesday.

Love,
THE CITY
