This year we have seen a number of strikes come and go. However, none of
them was and is comparable to the wild labor dispute of the truckers inGräfenhausen that has been going on for months. ---- In March, severaldozen truck drivers working for Polish freight forwarder Lukasz Mazurwent on a wildcat strike at a highway rest area near Darmstadt afterthey were not paid their wages. This move highlighted the catastrophicworking conditions in which truckers - most of them from distant regionssuch as Georgia and Uzbekistan - have to work in the EU. Mazur respondedto the resistance of his workers by sending a group of thugs and anarmored vehicle. But this attempt at violent intimidation bounced backfrom the determination of the drivers and the solidarity organized byvarious unions and political initiatives. Soon it seemed as if Mazurwould have to give in and finally pay off his workers.But almost three months later, in mid-July, several dozen Mazur truckersgathered again in Gräfenhausen. Again it was about outstanding wagepayments. They went on strike again. Because the situation was dramaticand still is - not only for the striking drivers, but also for theirfamilies at home who depend on their wages. Recently, more than a dozenof the drivers went on hunger strike. They have now canceled this again.The second strike also received media attention and solidarity fromoutside. Not only from the DGB unions, but also, for example, from theconstruction workers of the syndicalist union SAC from Sweden. Butoverall, solidarity efforts have noticeably declined. Providing thestrikers with food and other necessities is critical. We therefore callon you to support the fundraising efforts of your colleagues at FAUFrankfurt.
