Colombo ---- Bernardo Veksler,author of the book "The Battle of the Ovens. Memory of struggles,utopias and martyrs" recalls the construction of the struggle of ceramicworkers. It takes us into the daily life of that time, unfortunately notvery different from what we go through now. Getting off the bus at dawn,passing by the broken tiles of the kiosk, the discolored walls, thesilence and its aromas. This is how every morning began or begins. Theusual path of silenced quarrels falls asleep when entering the decrepitfacilities of Lozadur.It was a context of agitated union struggles, there were unions moreactive than others and the ceramists' union managed to kick the unionbureaucracy that sat placidly with the factory bosses. The fight was notonly against the bosses but also against the betrayal of that sameleadership. Protecting the union headquarters translated into armedpickets against the union gang. They were turbulent times. The hope ofthe banning of Peronism made the union movement see a light at the endof the tunnel. It was hoped that the arrival of their leader wouldrestore some of the dignified conditions that once existed. The lyingillusions that someone is going to save us, always placing usdefenseless, minimizing the organization and strength that we build.Ideological errors that we carry to this day with a unionism that makesalliances with politicians and businessmen, tearing apart any index ofsocial change. Keep everything the same for the same as always. Get ridof the idea that unionism is ours to take care of dirtying it with itsleaders and anchoring ourselves in the same hole.The author tells us about those ideas at that time "we were convincedthat human beings were preparing to leave the prehistory of humanitybehind and moved decisively towards a society that would end theignorance, brutalization, exploitation and superstition of religions;and that we would overcome all kinds of miseries, repressions and wars."The extermination that was carried out had to do above all with erasingany need for social transformation. It was Peronism itself who handedover its obedient bases by signing the decree of the beginning of tripleA. The extermination was underway and did not stop. We know the history.What we sometimes forget is the accomplices who deliver. The dead arealways the same.The union activism on the part of the ceramic workers was reflected inthe transformation that began to happen in the factories and workshops.A change was achieved in the management's treatment of its workers, theyreduced the arbitrariness of bosses and foremen or considered the claimsraised by the delegates. Nursery, changing rooms, compliance with safetyand hygiene standards in the workplace and even rest between hours witha snack included were achieved.The military coup did not stop the union agitation in Lozador. It isfrom this extermination plan that at the end of October and beginning ofNovember a series of disappearances occur in the ceramists' union. It isestimated that on the night of November 2 and early morning of November3, 1977, at least seven workers from Lozadur were kidnapped, which couldbe verified: the sisters Felicidad and Dominga Abadía Crespo, SofíaCardozo and Elba María Puente Campo, the delegates Pablo Villanueva andIsmael Notaliberto and Francisco Palavecino, members of the last Boardof Directors of the ceramics union of Villa Adelina (Puente andPalavecino had worked in the intervened union until September 1976).In commemoration of their struggle we pay tribute on October 30. As wesaid, we vindicated these workers from various ceramic factories andmembers of the Ceramics Union who were demanding improvements in wages,hygiene and workplace safety. Veksler asks us at the end of his book"What will remain from so many experiences lived together? Will theydisintegrate like the walls of the old building in the face ofinevitable migration? There was no place on our horizon for an endinglike that, our collective feeling clung to that scenario, but a cunningblow cut our time short." Yes, they cut our time. And that is why theexercise of memory must remain latent.
