Let's stand together in Prague on April 6 against the obscurantist
efforts of the klerofascists! ---- Another March for Life will take
place in Prague on Saturday, April 6. The organizers have learned from
previous years, they do not reveal their real agenda (including the ban
on abortion) and they no longer profile the parade as a religious event
or a march with crosses symbolizing "murdered children". The march is
outwardly a celebration of the family, where parents can have a sausage
and thank the children for not being aborted, or where the government is
appealed to provide better financial support for parents. After all, a
number of politicians - regardless of their affiliation with the current
cabinet or the opposition - come here regularly. But...
Beneath this charade are hidden fundamentalist views and an insidious
attempt to manipulate the entire society. The organizing Movement for
Life is an extremely active lobby group by Czech standards. Although it
gets into the media relatively often, most of their activities are very
quiet - they go around their agenda in parliament and through
sympathizers in parties from ANO to ODS to KDU-CSL they gain allies for
an apparently neutral pro-family policy, the clear goal of which is a
rigid medieval. The chairman of the Movement, Radim Uchác, summed it up
a few years ago: "the ban on abortion (...) is only ten percent of what
we want".
It wasn't that long ago that the Pro-Life Movement was publishing books
labeling gays and lesbians as "perverts" or promoting the brainwashing
of random people to "re-educate" them into heterosexuality. Not so long
ago, when the leading faces of the Movement participated in the fight
against expertly based sex education in schools, when they were in an
association exhibiting drastic pictures discouraging abortion in front
of schools, or when they went to conferences in Moscow to listen to the
speeches of Putin's old confidants about "the protection of traditional
family' over 'gender ideology'.
In short, the pro-life movement is a part of generously funded political
networks that not only block the rights of queer people or responsible
solutions to sexually-based violence, but also anger society for many
years. The fact that the movement successfully addresses elected
representatives, rents a lot of advertising space and runs a supposed
helpline for unexpectedly pregnant women under the (here, downright
cynical) slogan "We don't judge, we help" does not change what "for
life" means to him .
It is a "life" modeled on American states, where radical conservatives
force minor rape victims to carry and give birth to a fetus. Where,
following the example of Russia, any mention of the existence of queer
people is persecuted. Where the most important thing in real life -
family and children - is taken hostage by extreme religious ideology and
a simple struggle for power.
We will not let such a group pass through Prague! As in previous years,
we will be in the streets on the day of the march and will work together
to block it non-violently. For the right to make decisions about your
body, for the rights of queer people, for the rights of children,
families and for life. They won't pass!
