Gender critical is a globally organized cross-front that uses
trans*hostility to unite different actors - from more or less radical
feminists to conservatives and religious fundamentalists to neo-Nazis
and the Alt Right. This patchwork has explosive potential as a motor for
the current shift to the right in global politics. Anti-trans narratives
are spreading rapidly as a popular means of regressive mobilization from
the right.
The lecture explores the origins of the gender critical movement in
feminist discourses of the 1980s and what role trans*misogyny plays in
the formation of politically organized trans*hostility to this day.
Using current examples, the material prerequisites for the movement's
growth are understood and its significance in today's political
developments is understood.
