101 years ago, on March 18, 1923, the "Day of Political Prisoners" was
launched by the International Red Aid. This date was chosen symbolically
to commemorate the Paris Commune of 1871, the first modern social
revolution of the working class. The Paris Commune fought for 72 days
against the bourgeois French army and the Prussian siege ring before it
was defeated militarily on May 21, 1871. The bloody week of civil terror
that followed led to the deaths of at least 20,000 Communards, and
around 45,000 were sentenced to long prison sentences and deportations
to penal colonies.
Even today the number of politically persecuted and imprisoned people
continues to rise. Whether left-wing movements from Turkey and
Kurdistan, the climate movement, the anarchist and communist movements
or convinced anti-fascists - in addition to the fight for a better life
for everyone, we are united by the threat of the repressive hand of the
state, which breaks us, silences us or should fill people with fear in
order to maintain the status quo.
Our answer is solidarity and class struggle, because for us it is
self-evident: it is not the resistance that is criminal, but the system
that creates political prisoners. People are criminalized and imprisoned
because of their political beliefs or commitment to social justice,
while those responsible for this oppression remain unpunished. It is
important to realize that solidarity with prisoners can be a powerful
weapon in times of oppression and injustice. Outside support can help
overcome the harsh reality of prison and continue the fight. The vital
dynamic of our movements also depends on how we work for the release of
those who advocate or have advocated for our common goals.
It is therefore our responsibility to support our fellow activists and
fight for their release. In this sense, we (not only) remember the
political prisoners from our movements today and continue to fight for
their release.
