That of the cemetery and the other of the stadium are the only green
spots that can be seen from above as you reach a viewpoint along the
hairpin bends that lead from Trapani to the top of the Erice hill. The
rest of the territory, narrow in the classic pointed shape between the
two seas, suffocates between concrete, asphalt and rows of cars
circulating or parked everywhere. ---- In these conditions, and I forget
that the presence of areas permeable to rainwater represents the only
prevention of the not infrequent harmful floods that hit the city, the
city government - led by PD and Northern League hidden under the civic
flags - has decided to support yet another cement building project.
Since the "America's Cup" - 2005 - the city right, at the time led by
Senator Antonio D'Alì (Forza Italia), now imprisoned in the Opera prison
in Milan serving a sentence for external complicity in a mafia
association, and certain rampant and unscrupulous city entrepreneurship,
have set themselves the objective of re-demarcating the Reserve, of the
Salt Lines of Trapani to carry out building speculation on the
"liberated" areas. Already in 2003, the construction of illegal
construction works in the former salt pans was reported, in that case
with the involvement of Giuseppe Ruggirello, later a regional deputy of
the Democratic Party and now convicted in first instance for mafia.
Those illegal works were then remedied on paper.
«Now comes the mega project of roads serving the SEZ; a subdivision
project reappears which includes the inevitable buildings, as well as a
multiplex and a set of commercial establishments", denounced, in general
silence, Emilio Mangiarotti, president of Erythros association for
public/private greenery and urban decoration.
The environmentalist association, in particular, criticizes «the
construction of the infrastructures linked to the SEZ impacting the salt
pans area: It is clear that the salt pans area will not be able to hold
up much longer in the face of the appetites of a society which, in
words, he is moved and takes his children to see the storks, the
cormorants, the egrets and the iconic flamingos, but then he doesn't get
upset when it comes to building concrete everywhere and at any cost."
Among the planned works, «a viaduct that runs parallel to an existing
one to support a hypothetical increase in freight traffic at the port of
Trapani. A viaduct which should reduce (by less than a km!!!) the route
compared to the existing one, which passes over one of the very few
green areas of the city, recently recovered by the municipality of
Trapani itself, which sees (at the moment in which we write) the
settlement of storks - birds rarely seen in Trapani».
This work is added to the "two variations to the PUG which made it
possible to build the RSA which took away almost 8 thousand square
meters of land intended for greenery, and started the underpass by RFI
in the same area". From the 1960s to today, anthropic pressure on the
territory has become unsustainable; the Trapani salt pans have begun to
be surrounded by new buildings: the condominiums in Via Virgilio, the
desalination plant and the purifier, and then many industrial warehouses
which, once the financing was disposed of, closed their doors without -
as ISPRA proposes - any provided for the reuse of already artificialized
areas rather than new land consumption.
«Next to the pools now frequented by dozens of different species of
birds, the economic fabric of the historic city is also being damaged»,
adds the Erythros statement.
With the new works planned, explains the association, «a further
emptying of the historic center of the city is decreed, an already ghost
historic center, now reduced to an empty box with only a few streets in
which accommodation facilities, bars, restaurants and pizzerias, with
negative and dangerous repercussions on the social life of our fellow
citizens".
«The subdivision project is anachronistic - assures Emilio Margagliotti
of Erythros -, in fact, the trend recognized by all the administrations
is to promote initiatives to repopulate the historic centers of the cities».
«What will be the effect on the local economy deriving from the SEZ? How
many jobs will be created? Has an analysis of the economic impact of the
project been carried out? What are the expected results? On the basis of
which studies?" asks Margagliotti, finding no confirmation in the
planning documents he examined.
Erythros' conclusion is clearly a rejection of the capitalist system: «A
development model that favors immediate and easy profit to the detriment
of quality of life and environmental protection is no longer acceptable.
The private individual who is in business hardly takes into account if
his interest conflicts with naturalistic needs; while the politician, to
demonstrate that "he is good", does not miss out on funding to carry out
projects of any nature".
Not caring if the works for which he received funding really serve the
community and do not collide with environmental protection.
