Three Last Generation activists have received in recent days, from the
Palermo Police Headquarters, an expulsion order lasting one year for one
of them and three years for the other two. The warning follows the
nonviolent action carried out on 29 March at the Trapezoidal Pier in the
port of Palermo as a sign of protest against the waste of water
represented by the large tank in an area where drought, which has now
become a reality, imposes the rationing of drinking water for almost a
million citizens while the countryside is heading towards an
irreversible process of desertification.
The Last Generation campaign is aimed at requesting a preventative,
permanent and participatory Repair Fund, to be included annually in the
State budget, to repay those damaged by disasters caused by climate
change. The money will have to be obtained through the elimination of
Environmentally Harmful Subsidies (SAD), the taxation of extra-profits
of fossil fuel companies, the cutting of salaries, bonuses and benefits
of their managers, the reduction of the enormous expenses of politics
and the increasingly huge military expenditures.
The action of March 29 was judged to be a criminal act and the three
activists were considered potential criminals, in a city that has very
different priorities when it comes to crime and the mafia. Evidently the
directives of the Disorder and Anti-Crime Forces are very different and
are dictated directly by the Interior Ministry, increasingly active in
persecute young people who practice direct action, risking themselves,
in order to spread the alarm about the urgency of radical mitigation and
adaptation measures necessary to curb the effects of climate change
produced by the destructive action of capital.
