Today's top of the news
- Pro-European parties have maintained a majority in the European Parliament, enhancing Ursula von der Leyen’s chances for reelection.
- The European People’s Party (EPP) won 189 out of 720 seats, an increase of 15 seats compared to 2019.
- The Socialists and Democrats (S&D) secured 135 seats, with gains in France, Italy, and Romania, but losses in Poland and Germany.
- Renew Europe remains the third largest force, despite reducing their seats from 102 to 83.
- The democratic majority is projected to have 407 MEPs, or 56% of the seats. Von der Leyen needs 361 votes for reelection.
- Far-right and national conservative parties slightly increased their seats. ECR increased from 69 to 72 seats, and Identity and Democracy (ID) gained nine seats.
- 'Non-attached' or 'other' parties, including Viktor Orbán's Fidesz and Italy’s Five Star Movement, will influence the next legislative term.
