Continuously engaged in the ongoing wars, the NO MUOS Movement has taken
part in all the initiatives, in particular those against the genocide of
the Palestinian people, which intersected with April 25th. In Palermo,
the meeting with local transport workers was important, organized by
Cobas autoferrotramvieri and Alleanza No Guerra; much participated by
the workers, it was an opportunity to spread counter-information on the
involvement of Italy and Sicily in the ongoing conflicts and how the
city is also directly involved in the wars, with the military
commissions at the Naval Shipyard and with the Leonardo SpA factory in
the Guadagna district. Making known that Palermo is home to death
garrisons was important because these realities have been carefully
camouflaged over time.
The arrest of Luigi Spera and the restrictions on the freedom of
movement of a companion, both of Antudo, are closely linked to the
presence of Leonardo, against whom two years ago a merely demonstrative
act was carried out of which the two companions are accused, an action
tending, at that precise moment, to denounce Turkey's genocidal
aggression against the Kurdish people, with Italian armament. A campaign
is underway for Luigi's release and for the elimination of restrictions
on his partner.
Also in Catania there was great activism, with the police taking a hard
line towards students, a very hot 25th April, characterized by the
rejection of official celebrations to highlight today's fascisms, those
which claim innocent victims in the ongoing wars, Gaza and Ukraine in head.
In Ragusa, the No Wars Assembly was formed at the end of April, by
individuals of different political backgrounds, on the basis of three
watchwords: disarmament, desertion, disobedience; its first outing was
during the "May Day against all wars" organized by the anarchist group,
with, among others, the intervention of Antonio Mazzeo. Mazzeo himself
presented the book "The school goes to war - The militarization of
education in Italy" the evening before in Modica, at the Laveronica Gallery.
Some news that concerns us: on April 30th the Meloni government
performed one of its miracles in defense of citizens' health, raising
the electromagnetic emission limit from the precautionary average of 6
V/m to 15 V/m. An operation to protect 5G companies and all telephone
operators, but also military telecommunications structures, such as the
MUOS in Niscemi.
We note, with respect to a measure passed under the radar and released
in the middle of a holiday weekend, the tough stance taken by 8 Ligurian
municipalities, who have issued "contingent and urgent ordinances" to
maintain the electromagnetic emission limit on the administered
municipal territory in the precautionary average of 6 V/m. They are all
municipalities in the metropolitan area of Genoa: Lavagna, Cogorno,
Leivi, Ne, Rapallo, Santa Margherita Ligure, Sestri Levante and Pieve
Ligure; here, to protect the health of their fellow citizens, the mayors
have prohibited "any increase in the limits of electromagnetic fields".
A courageous choice that should be made known and exported throughout Italy.
Meanwhile, on May 5th, the regional demonstration "Let's stop the
genocide of the Palestinian people - Immediate and definitive ceasefire
- Let's demilitarize Sigonella! Let's boycott Israel! - Italy out of
NATO! Keep war out of history!". The procession, which was joined by
numerous regions of solidarity with Palestine, the NO MUOS Movement,
grassroots unions and anti-militarist organisations, once again placed
the central role of the US and NATO bases in Sicily in the wars at the
center of attention in progress: "Sicily is increasingly involved in the
spiral of war: since last November the Global Hawk drones have taken off
from the Sigonella base and for a few weeks the TRITONs for intelligence
and surveillance operations over the entire Middle East, as well as the
P8 Poseidon patrol planes, while Globe Master cargo planes continue to
transfer weapons and ammunition from the USA (via Ramstein, Germany) to
the Israeli air base of Nevatim, in the Negev desert. Furthermore, the
ports of Augusta and Catania were involved in the NATO anti-submarine
exercises Dynamic Manta 2024, militarizing the Ionian Sea, while
humanitarian ships continue to be prevented from landing, thus hindering
the rescue of migrants at sea".
