In the heart of Serbia, amidst the bustling streets and whispers of compassion, lies Jelena's Animal Sanctuary—a haven for the wounded and weary souls of the streets. Jelena's sanctuary is home to 20 cats, 90+ dogs, 7 sheep, 2 pigs, and 2 goats, all of whom have found a safe refuge thanks to her unwavering dedication and love. Among the many animals she cares for, Dekica, a battered and broken survivor, has a particularly heartbreaking story.

In February, Dekica was struck by a bike, shattering his pelvis and hip. With unwavering determination, Jelena embarked on a journey to mend his broken body, offering him a second chance at life. Day by day, Dekica's spirit soared as he savored the freedom of his newfound mobility, basking in the warmth of the sun-drenched yard beside his furry companions. However, fate proved cruel once again when Dekica was struck by a car, shattering his hind leg into pieces. As the days blurred into one another, Jelena stood by his side, unwavering in her commitment to his recovery. Now, Dekica lies in the sterile confines of a veterinary clinic in Belgrade, facing a daunting road to recovery.

The cost of Dekica's surgery looms large, a daunting sum that threatens to eclipse their hopes and dreams. Yet, in the face of adversity, they refuse to falter. With each passing moment, the bonds of compassion grow stronger, forging an unbreakable bond between man and beast. As the sun sets on another day, a chorus of prayers rises into the night sky, carrying with it the hopes and dreams of all who dare to believe in miracles. For Dekica, the journey is far from over, but with each beat of his weary heart, he embodies the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.

Despite the challenges, Jelena continues to provide food and care for all her animals, often struggling to make ends meet. She is vegan, and all her animals are her friends, sharing in her compassion and love for all living beings.

Among these numerous rescues is a small Jack Russell puppy who was abandoned because she was sick. This tiny, fragile creature arrived at Jelena's sanctuary battling a severe case of parvo. Through countless sleepless nights and intensive treatment, the little Jack Russell pulled through. Today, she is a symbol of hope and resilience, a testament to the life-saving work that Jelena performs daily.

In Serbia, many dogs live in very poor conditions, often on chains or in very small enclosures, even if they are purebred and paid for. Despite the availability of free neutering at several vets in Niš, there are still so many abandoned puppies of different ages, from just born to older ones that can eat by themselves.
The same goes for cats; no matter how many are neutered, it is never enough to prevent more kittens from appearing everywhere. The city pound that used to kill dogs now neuters and returns them to the streets and offers neutering to citizens for their dogs. However, the situation in Serbia, as seen in daily Facebook posts, seems worse than ever, with dogs and puppies in need all over.
