Goeienavond beste lezer, Het is van het mooiste zoeken, vind ik, dat zoeken waarin het evenzeer om de tocht als om de vondst draait. Zo anders dan dat zoeken dat van moeten is, dat nerveuze wroeten in je tas als je weer eens je sleutels niet vindt, en vervolgens in je brein als de sleutels niet gevonden zijn, want waar had je ze ook alweer het laatst gehad en wat had je daarna gedaan en waar zou je ze misschien achteloos achtergelaten kunnen hebben? Zoeken dat oefening vergt, zoeken om maar af en toe te vinden - en dan evenzo euforisch te zijn. Meesters in dat zorgzame zoeken zijn de amateurarcheologen: onvermoeibaar graven ze naar wat de aarde nog verborgen houdt. En anders dan vroeger worden ze ook steeds meer gezien. Want vaak ontdekken ze plekken die de professionele archeologie nog niet op haar radar heeft staan. Sites waarvan de ontginning tijd, geduld en toewijding vraagt - precies wat amateurarcheologen vaak te bieden hebben.
