What if the Olympic Games were not only held in Paris? What if other
territories had natural wonders that impose respect and humility onthose who face them. This is the case for Polynesia and its legendary
wave. Editions Au Vent des îles offers us: Teahupo o, The Breath of the
Wave, Written by Ingrid Astier published in 2024 ---- It is a publishing
house that invites you to travel through Oceania. It is established on
the ground and makes us discover the diverse cultures of these islands,
presented by authors imbued with humanism. This book is published as
part of the 2024 Olympic Games, where the surfing events will take
place. ---- The writer, Ingrid Astier, is a graduate of the École
Normale Supérieure and a graduate of the French National School of
Literature. She has frequently stayed in Polynesia and collected the
words of the great names in surfing, herself passionate about extreme
swimming.
Teahupo o, The Breath of the Wave is her fifth novel, a crime novel.
Finally, let us highlight the sober beauty of the book cover due to the
talent of Gabrielle Ambrym, an illustrator who grew up in the South
Pacific. This painting represents a moray eel illustrated in the manner
of the aborigines in a background of graphic and calm waves, in the
colors of corals, an undulating body, ocean blue stained with regular
and soft colors, nothing worrying after all, except sharp teeth.
A wave, the main heroine of the book
Teahupo o, beloved by Tahitian surfers is at the heart of the novel.
This wave is the main heroine of the book, and man owes it humility and
submission. The writer evokes this wave as the itinerary of each of the
actors in the novel, whether they are surfers or not.
I quote: "The wall stood up. A real wall. The marriage of surfing and
climbing. Hiro could have seen it 10,000 times, he would always have
been impressed by its terrifying majesty."
And then there are the sublime landscapes, the bush, the animals,
amazing fish, the coral reefs, the dream lagoons.
It is in this incredible setting that we meet Moea inhabited by violent
memories, Birdy injured by the wave, Taj, the drug addict, Hiro, the one
who lives the wave, despite his torments and sorrows, Reva, between man
and woman, lost and Tamatoa, the kind, always ready to help his neighbor.
How can we not be touched by these words: "When people are like stone,
we should not ask them to be a stream".
Each one facing his responsibility
Wounded people, all; each one disturbing, endearing.
The Tahitian vocabulary introduced by the writer in certain passages of
the novel sends more colors, these words carry with them the mistrust as
the particularity of certain things or plants or certain states, to
relativize them or by search of discretion, to remain modest in front of
the indomitable things.
The wave is a living novel, we find as much horror as beauty, and the
quest for balance.
The fall of the text in particular sends each of us in front of his
responsibility to face his breaking wave.
Birdy, wounded by the wave underlines it well "We do not say: an
accident happened to me, but I had an accident"
Finally Tahiti under these images of Epinal we know, lagoons, bush and
fantastic waves. The island also experiences these cyclones, storms and
suffering.

I hope you enjoy reading this novel
