From May 24 to 26, the Earth Uprisings (SdT) called, with the support
of political, union and associative organizations, to mobilize against
the Greendock warehouse project that harms the local environment. Faced
with this mobilization, the State deploys its police arsenal to protect
the liberal production model. It is urgent to build an ecological
struggle strong enough to disrupt capitalist and destructive projects.
Three comrades from UCL on site develop their analysis of the Stop
Greendock mobilization.
Greendock is a warehouse project sold by its real estate developers as a
marvel combining economic development and protection of nature. Really?
This project will be embodied in prefabricated structures 600 meters
long and 35 meters high, along the banks of the Seine. An opportunity to
allow the fauna and flora of the Natura 2000 zone, located a few hundred
meters from the project, to benefit from the benefits of capitalism with
a lot of concreting. People living in the northern suburbs of Paris,
already heavily urbanized, will have the chance to access new precarious
jobs and air that is increasingly polluted by the comings and goings of
boats and trucks.
Not very enthusiastic about these great promises, a very broad united
framework mobilized against the project, from La France insoumise to the
more autonomous activist community, including local environmental
groups, associations and of course unions. The weekend first opened with
a round table, with CGT unionists from logistics and waste, and from Sud
Rail, highlighting the attacks on social rights with the creation of
precarious jobs in these sectors of activity.
Devices deployed to protect capitalism
The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday demonstration, which
combined direct action and a family march. Attention was paid to the
safety of the demonstrators thanks to a legal and medical brief, and
with the establishment of a legal rear base and a reception in case of
need for emotional support. All necessary and salutary precautions in
view of the current repression of environmental movements.
Indeed, as with each demonstration-action coordinated by the SdT, a
large police force surrounds the demonstration with lines of CRS placed
at the front and rear of the procession. This is a clear illustration of
what the government defends: for it, the environmental movement is
dangerous, if not terrorist. This is how it justifies the use of
measures that are nevertheless violent and intimidating but considered
adequate to control the supposedly threatening social mobilization. The
purpose of maintaining order as defended by the State is to protect the
capitalist production model and to prevent at all costs the spread of
protest tactics in environmentalist circles.
But what threat are we talking about? These are in reality symbolic
actions such as blocking an industrial zone for two hours or building a
sheepfold on a motorway route or on non-artificialised land. Although
insufficient to prevent the effective implementation of such an
excessive project, these actions can expose activists to profiling and
judicial repression. This leads us to wonder whether the objectives of
the action were commensurate with the personal risks taken by the people
who came to demonstrate.
Collectively building the ecological struggle
For several years now, logistics warehouses have been developing,
particularly due to the increase in online commerce, and benefit from
massive aid from the public authorities. The SdTs certainly do not yet
have the strength needed to be a sufficient counter-power to force the
State to give in or stop such a project, but the movement raises
awareness, disturbs the capitalists and the liberal government, and
manages to mobilize massively. The SdTs put pressure on these projects
that are harmful both socially and ecologically. This way of doing
things is inspiring for environmental mobilizations because for us, it
is by building common gatherings with local associations, unions in the
sectors concerned and political forces that we will defend a real
popular and social ecology.
