ACADEMY OF DEMOCRATIC MODERNITY ---- In Kurdish the word for education
is perwerde, which comes from a root associated with giving wings, preparing for flight. Learning is fêrbun, hînbun or hobun. The suffix
-bun at the end of the word learning expresses formation (constitution).
---- This conceptual root shows that education is not handled with an
approach that dictates and molds, but an educational approach that
mobilizes the inner potential of the individual. It is the pedagogical
approach of the ancient culture of the lands in Kurdistan. Therefore,
education is defined as a training process that allows the individual to
stand on his own and fly.
For the development of the movement, popular education has been the
basic pillar of both the training of the young people who joined the
ranks of the party, as well as of society in general. From the very
beginning, Abdullah Öcalan made education the most fundamental
revolutionary task for the party. Activities that began with reading and
discussing books in student communal houses and
transforming these discussions into written works have developed into
the academy model,
which today determines the educational approach of the Kurdistan freedom
movement.
Beginning with military, political and philosophical training
in the camps of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and then in the
Damascus academy for
decades, these activities revealed a unique pedagogical approach and
academy model. Thousands of people
were trained in these academies. In all areas, from guerrilla camps,
student and worker communes, neighborhoods and villages to
academic settings, the pedagogical approach revealed by this experience
has been taken as a basis. Academies were established in all areas where
the Kurdistan freedom movement was effective. These academies continue
to carry out uninterrupted educational work.
The goal of education is to enable the individual and the community to
become Xwebun. The concept of Xwebun requires a connection between
existence and consciousness. In this context, it introduces the term of
a "moral and political society" that governs itself from the bottom up.
In the trainings, we establish the connection between knowledge and life
with the method we call "analyzing." For example, in the context of a
topic, we collectively question how the person applies this knowledge in
his or her life or why he or she does not apply it. When talking about
gender, the individual is asked to give examples from his or her
childhood or current life, in order to make analysis, then questions are
collectively asked and perspectives are given for the individual.
Training spaces are not only understood as the "class" but also as the
whole life around it, which is done collectively. Attitudes can also be
the subject of these analyses.
A system of "autonomous education" has also developed, where women
educate themselves and each other. These trainings play a very important
role
in eliminating the sociological and psychological effects of sexist
society and patriarchal traditions on women, and in enabling women to
build and
lead their own spaces with their own power. Autonomous trainings have
played an empowering role
in developing the power of thought,
gaining self-confidence, sharing and analyzing life experiences
in a carefree manner and establishing bonds of camaraderie (Hevaltî)
among women. "Autonomous trainings" are also
organized for men, but they are taught by women. For years, courses such
as gender, killing the dominant male, history of women's liberation, and
jineolojî have been taught
entirely by women.
In this sense, given all the influence of the system on oneself, on each
person, this intellectual
revolution is necessary. In self-government, especially with popular
education, we fight to generate a democratic culture, our fight is
against the old mentality and
for a peaceful, free and democratic life.
We aspire to create a culture that allows each individual
to continue to educate themselves, their family and the people with whom
they
live and work, is another important issue of our educational work. We
consider education as an
endless process that extends to all areas of life, beyond an activity
whose duration and form
are determined.
