Suffering of Tanzania's Donkeys and Dogs. We must help them before it is too late.

Dear friends,

We are immensely grateful for your unwavering support that has allowed us to extend our reach to the most neglected and suffering animals in Tanzania. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve been able to expand our efforts beyond the cities into remote rural areas, where both dogs and donkeys are in desperate need of medical care. Your donations have made it possible for us to continue providing vital treatments, but the need is far from over.

The Heartbreaking Reality for Donkeys and Dogs

In Tanzania, many donkeys are overworked, neglected, and suffering. In areas that were once ravaged by the cruel donkey skin trade, thousands of donkeys have been left untreated and overburdened. These animals are the backbone of rural livelihoods, used to transport goods over long distances, often through harsh terrains, with little to no rest. The pain these donkeys endure is unimaginable, with infections, wounds, and parasite infestations left untreated for months, sometimes years.

Thanks to our dedicated team at the Tanzania Animal Welfare Society (Taweso), we have started helping around 500 donkeys in some of the most remote areas. But their recovery is long and difficult. Wounds need constant care, and many suffer from worm infestations, lameness, and other serious conditions. Our current goal is to provide essential veterinary care, which will take around two months and cost approximately $5,000.

Your donations have already allowed us to take the first steps in saving these donkeys, but we urgently need more help to see this through. Without continued support, these animals won’t survive the harsh conditions.

Meet Mori: The Face of Neglect

Among the many dogs we’ve encountered, one stands out: Mori, a 4-year-old dog who has endured unimaginable hardship. Mori is one of thousands of neglected dogs in Tanzania. He suffers from severe skin conditions, including mange, fungal infections, and a heavy infestation of parasites. Mori spends his days rubbing his body on rough surfaces, desperate for relief from the itching and pain. His constant suffering leaves him terrified, always on edge, and afraid to interact with humans.

Our team has begun treating Mori, but his road to recovery will take several months. With proper treatment, we believe Mori can heal and live a better life. However, we can only continue this work with your help. Mori represents the countless dogs across rural Tanzania who need urgent care. Your donations can make the difference between life and death for animals like Mori.

The Aftermath of the Donkey Skin Trade

Tanzania once lost millions of donkeys during the brutal donkey skin trade, which saw these animals slaughtered for their skins. Today, the trade is banned, thanks in part to the relentless efforts of Taweso and other local partners. However, the scars of this horrific trade remain. Many donkeys were abandoned, left to suffer in the most inhumane conditions, and now require immediate care. The situation is dire, and we need to act fast to save them.

How You Can Help

We are incredibly thankful for your past support, which has allowed us to reach animals in areas we once thought inaccessible. But now, more than ever, we need your help to continue this vital work.

•    A donation of $50 can provide food and basic medical supplies for a dog like Mori for a week.

•    A donation of $100 can help fund the treatment for a neglected donkey, ensuring they receive the care they need to recover from years of abuse and overwork.

•    A donation of $500 can cover the full veterinary care for one donkey until they are fully healed.
