The IWA is an international association of revolutionary workers.
Founded in Berlin in 1922, it has been fighting for over a century,
against all odds, for self-management and the libertarian organization
of workers. It currently has organizations in 21 countries and has
expanded to new regions of the world. ---- One of the best-known
organizations of our International is the CNT-IWA of Spain. A few years
ago, a faction of this organization succeeded, among other things,
through purges, in taking de facto control of all the increasingly
centralized functions of the organization. It also tried,
unsuccessfully, to change the voting system of the IWA to take votes
away from the majority of the IWA sections and, if that failed, to
"relaunch" the IWA behind closed doors with only two other sections.
Finally, this faction launched a new international organization, the
International Confederation of Labor (ICL), composed of other
organizations with practices very different from the IWA. The CNT-AIT
still remains the Spanish section of the IWA, maintaining the same
anarcho-syndicalist principles of the original Spanish CNT.
It should be noted that the Spanish section of the IWA (which calls
itself "CNT"), which has permanent professional lawyers, claims the
exclusive right to the name CNT and demands that it be assigned all the
assets (and in particular the premises) held by the CNT-AIT. The Spanish
IWA in fact stole the archives of the IWA, which it keeps in poor
conditions in a warehouse outside Toledo, refusing all access to them.
It is also suing many CNT-AIT unions for usurpation of acronym and
squatting (as well as a libertarian athenaeum in the latter case),
demanding enormous sums of money. The decision to start these lawsuits
was taken by the lawyers, not by the entire membership of the Spanish
CIT, which shows the authoritarian and vertical orientation that this
union has taken. These lawsuits will be heard in court next September.
This Spanish organization claims in particular that the CNT-AIT cannot
be called CNT-AIT because the AIT does not exist.
This is a very audacious lie on the part of the Spanish organization of
the CIT, which knows full well that the AIT exists and has existed for
over a century.
We imagine, based on the legal documents, that this band of unscrupulous
lawyers will try to use the state to wage their war against
anarcho-syndicalists in Spain on the pretext that the AIT is not legally
registered in Spain, while their organization CNT CIT respects the laws
of the state, including by providing information to the state on their
own members.
The lack of ethics in their arguments is appalling. All the more so
since the name CNT-AIT is also shared by another IWA organization,
CNT-AIT France. It was to France that many of the CNT-AIT refugees went
after Franco came to power, and for years this organization of French
comrades ensured the survival of the IWA in the post-war period. Our
French comrades have also undergone organizational changes, and there
are currently three different CNTs in that country. 1 Are they suing
each other and claiming, like the Spanish, that they "cannot develop"
because the workers confuse their organizations? Of course, this is not
the case. This is a particular vindictiveness against our Spanish
section, the CNT-AIT of Spain, which has refused to blindly follow the
people who consider themselves the vanguard of their organization. As
AIT, we are all in solidarity with our section, the Spanish CNT-AIT,
which is the continuation of the historic CNT-AIT in Spain. We express
our disgust at the shameless lies of the Spanish organization of the
CIT, which uses the logic of the State and statism and tries to pretend
that we do not exist. For us, this is absolute confirmation that these
people have broken with libertarian ethics and objectives and that they
act against those who still adhere to these libertarian ethics and
objectives.
We are the AIT and we will not back down. We are determined to continue
our struggle based on libertarian values, to maintain a strong
horizontal structure in Spain and to create new organizations throughout
the world.
The Spanish CIT organization is complaining to the state courts that
workers are "confusing" their organization with the CNT-AIT, that
workers "really want to join them, but they join the CNT-AIT instead"
and that this is preventing them from growing. How stupid do these
people really think workers are? We do not have these concerns, because
we believe that the people who join the CNT-AIT know what it is and what
it represents. At the same time, after having to endure the pompous
claims of this faction in Spain, which claims and has constantly claimed
that the CNT-AIT is just a small, insignificant group of radicals
compared to their powerful and numerous organization, such claims
submitted to the court show the extent of the hypocrisy to which they
can stoop, and this, by contradicting the discourse that they themselves
have put forward in the public space for more than a decade. We are the
AIT and we know what we represent and who represents what in Spain. The
state courts may not like the union that defends the social revolution
in this country, they may prefer the watered-down legalistic impostors,
those who will bow to their authority in the end. But our victory is to
maintain our principles, which no one has ever managed to take away from
us - not even any state repression.
Long live the AIT and long live the CNT-AIT!
