municipality in Canto Guelfo on September 10th. To our great surprise,
in the afternoon of the same day the banner was removed, with confusing
and unfounded reasons never written down.

We wanted to think of an error due to a lack of coordination and
communication between offices, and tried in every way to draw a veil of
silence over such an inappropriate intervention that was detrimental to
the freedom of expression of citizens. It is purely coincidental that
our initiative coincides with the celebrations organized for the
anniversary of the miraculous crucifix. Our event was scheduled since
June, and the SUEV had no trace of any other event for that date. It was
absolutely not our intention with this initiative, coinciding with the
religious celebrations, to disturb them.

We are certain that the pressure for the removal of the annoying banner
was not made by the curia or by the provost of the collegiate church of
Empoli, but that it is the result of the initiative of one or more local
Taliban who, shouting "deus vult", mount crusades against the
unbelievers, who dare to express their thoughts especially in the
presence of an eminent representative of the Holy Roman Church, have not
