Every time we try to distinguish the resistance of the Palestinian or
Lebanese people from the fundamentalist Shiite movements Hamas and
Hezbollah, whose social models based on the most misogynistic and
homophobic clerical fascism and the supremacy of the religious element
over everything, are absolutely unacceptable for us internationalists,
here we are told by some sectors of the activist or antagonistic left
that "we cannot nitpick what the people choose".
This concept, balanced between opportunism and superficiality, is very
dangerous. With it, any political-military force is justified, within a
clash with the American evil empire, especially those whose ideas are a
thousand miles away from the prospects of emancipation of the exploited,
of women, of the LGBTQIA+ segments, of equality and social justice.
But then, if we shouldn't pick on what people choose, we shouldn't pick
on the Ukrainians and their regime, the Americans and their imperialist
governments, the Italians who have gone astray to the right, and so on.
These comrades, all of a piece in their one-way anti-imperialism, don't
realize how ambiguous their idea of solidarity with resistance is. Their
predecessors got calluses on their hands beating Khomeini's Pasdaran;
they turned a blind eye to the dictatorial programs of the Vietnamese
communists or Pol Pot (Vietnam and Cambodia are today among the most
pro-liberal countries on the planet). And to those, like the anarchists,
who have never skimped on disinterested but critical solidarity, they
responded with the frown of those who had Marx's scientific truth in
their pocket: "you are the usual defeatists".
But we, as consistent internationalists and antimilitarists, pick on,
yes, we do. Always remaining on the side of the people, never of the
governments.
