September 28 is International Safe Abortion Day. ---- The Participation
Committee for Family Counseling Centers and Non Una di Meno Trieste are
organizing a demonstration that will be held on Saturday, September 28,
2024 starting at 11:00 in Largo Barriera. ---- On this day we will take
to the streets in many Italian cities to reaffirm the right to decide on
our bodies and our sexuality, won thanks to transfeminist battles. ----
If abortion in our country has been a missed right for years, the last
year of the Meloni government has led a renewed attack on reproductive
self-determination, also exploiting the weaknesses of law 194; a
controversial text that does not guarantee the right to choose and to
voluntary termination of pregnancy. A right that is prevented by the
very high number of conscientious objectors among healthcare workers. A
right that is also denied to trans, non-binary and intersex people, and
to migrants, due to the limitations they face if they have a tourist
visa. A right that in this way becomes more and more a class privilege.
Since taking office, the Meloni government has openly claimed not to
want to touch this law, but at the same time it has exploited its
weaknesses by allocating economic funds and giving political legitimacy
to anti-choice and anti-abortion movements, increasing the obstacles to
accessing IVG. This is why we have long been asking for "much more than
194!".
Abortion is an essential medical practice: it must be free, safe and
accessible to everyone!
We have always aborted and will always abort: however, we demand to do
so in safe conditions, without suffering judgment and discrimination,
including paternalistic, racist, ableist, transphobic, fatphobic and ageist.
We want it to be a self-determined choice: we ask that medical abortion
be available in all family counseling centers as established by law,
that RU 486 can be taken up to the 12th week as per the World Health
Organization guidelines, that those who want and have the possibility
can abort at home, with telemedicine or self-manage.
But, without counseling centers for everyone, all this remains a dead
letter.
We do not need anti-abortion associations that try to dissuade us by
exercising psychological violence. We need public funding for maternity,
contraception, abortion and prevention programs already provided by
counseling centers, which are however managed with difficulty and
fatigue by healthcare personnel now exhausted due to continuous cuts and
defunding.
At a time in history when wars, such as those in Ukraine and Sudan, and
the ongoing Palestinian genocide are endangering the right to access
health care, to personal hygiene and menstruation products, to the free
choice to continue a pregnancy or terminate it, WE ARE TAKING TO THE
STREETS!
Together we reiterate that we decide on our bodies, that we have always
aborted and will always abort!
