resulted in the arrest of several students and the parliamentarian
Glauber Braga, from PSOL. The occupation denounced the cuts in the
student assistance policy, which mainly affects the most precarious
students. The cowardly action of the military police, in the service of
the rector Gulnar Azevedo (linked to the PT) and her vice Bruno Desdará
(previously affiliated with the PSOL), had the explicit support of
governor Cláudio Castro (PL) and exemplifies the way in which state
public education is treated in Rio de Janeiro and also in several other
regions of Brazil, at the municipal, state and federal levels, whether
repressing and criminalizing the struggles waged by education workers,
or those waged by the student movement. The positions of the "left-wing"
political sectors aligned with the federal government were regrettable,
as they sought to criminalize students in their struggle. In addition,
they defended a rectorship aligned with the Cláudio Castro government
and used the riot police to try to silence the fight to maintain student
aid.

The students of UERJ on their different campuses showed the way to
defeat the policies of cutting student aid: the relentless struggle,
mobilization and historical methods of the working class. Strikes,
pickets and occupations are methods that have been very powerful at
various times in confronting the advance of REUNI - the Federal
Universities Restructuring and Expansion Program - and other neoliberal
policies that have been worsening since the turn of the FHC government
to the first Lula government; state and federal universities have seen
massive student strikes, occupations of rectorships and marches.

Regaining the radical nature of the student movement is of great
importance to guarantee real access, permanence and research that can
serve the working population. It is necessary to combat the neoliberal
policies that are taking root in universities through university
bureaucracy. Student reorganization, with a class-based, autonomous and
combative line, has a role to play, especially when it works together
with popular movements of rural and urban workers.

It is essential that all popular movements, unions and political
organizations denounce this type of policy and stand in solidarity with
the students of UERJ. A struggle that did not end with the repossession
and the violent repression of the last few days. Students continue to
mobilize and will hold another demonstration this Wednesday, the 2nd.
Demanding the immediate revocation of administrative measures that
attack student rights, and any other punitive policy that may occur
against those who dared to organize and fight, is an urgent task in
defense of public and quality education.
