WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY - MAGA at Madison Square Garden

Dear New Yorkers,

Over the weekend, New Yorkers turned out for early voting in record numbers — and tens of thousands of former President Donald Trump’s supporters descended on Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon for an eleventh-hour rally.

New York is, of course, Trump’s hometown. But registered Democrats outnumber Republicans six to one in the five boroughs — making it a rare destination for a GOP nominee nine days before a close election.

But New Yorkers in the crowd said they were glad Trump, who now lives in Florida, decided to drop by.

“I think it's all troll. And I love trolls,” said Victor Almonte, 45, from University Heights in The Bronx.

More than an hour into his remarks, Trump started talking about how “we want to thank Eric Adams” for the mayor’s dismissal of the claim — leveled by Trump’s former chief of staff — that he was a fascist.

A few minutes later, Trump moved on to a brief rant about how bad things supposedly are in New York City, where “your crime is through the roof.”

Our Other Top Stories

  • The NYPD is dragging its feet on making police stations accessible to those with disabilities — eight years after a class-action lawsuit claiming federal disability law violations. But deadlines to fix the stations have repeatedly been pushed back. “Delay, delay, delay is a standard tactic that the city uses,” said one advocate. “Almost five years after disabled people won in court, really nothing has happened to improve the accessibility of police precincts.”
  • A coalition of parks advocates are urging Mayor Eric Adams to lift a hiring freeze and restore hundreds of essential jobs in the city’s Parks Department — which has seen its budget slashes consistently over the last decade. The coalition plans to send a letter to the mayor that urges including more money for parks in the annual modification to the city budget that happens every November.

Things To Do

Here’s what’s going on around the city this week.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 31: “Bed Stuy Dreams: The Haunting,” a revival of the neighborhood’s haunted house event. Free from 12 to 8 p.m. at the Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Center in Herbert Von King Park.
  • Thursday, Oct. 31: The Village Halloween Parade, of course. Free from 7 p.m. starting at Canal Street and 6th Avenue, rain or shine. (It’s also broadcast live on Spectrum News NY1 starting at 8 p.m.)
  • Sunday, Nov. 2: The annual post-Halloween pumpkin smash, a fun and sustainable way to get rid of your jack-o-lanterns. Free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hudson River Park.

THE KICKER: Some cops who weren’t policing the rally at MSG were dispersing a lively Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest in Washington Square Park on Sunday afternoon. Chalamet, a Hell’s Kitchen native, managed to crash the party before it was broken up. He did not win the contest.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Monday.

Love,

THE CITY
