Dear reader,

One afternoon, late this September, New York City Mayor Eric Adams made history. He appeared in court to plead not guilty to federal corruption charges—the first-ever sitting NYC mayor to face criminal charges while still in office.

As the Adams administration has unraveled—with multiple probes leading to the resignation or sacking of the NYPD commissioner, schools chancellor, deputy mayor for public safety, first deputy mayor, Asian affairs advisor, senior advisor and others—THE CITY has been consistently in the lead. Our reporting has been at the center of the crisis engulfing the mayor’s office, and without the shoe-leather reporting of our journalists, the extent of the alleged corruption might never have come to light.

THE CITY was the first news outlet to uncover straw donations to Adams’ 2021 and 2025 campaigns. And our reporting red-flagged many of the practices and people that are now being probed by federal and district attorneys, from campaign fundraisers to shelter contracts and police impunity.

When news of a federal investigation into the mayor’s relationship with Turkish donors emerged, our team’s knowledge of building regulations, the fire department and campaign finance rules, enabled us to quickly discover significant new details. Many of the practices they uncovered are now the spine of the federal prosecutor’s 57-page indictment of Adams.

One reason our small team could do all of this was deep sourcing cultivated over years thanks to our decision to commit significant resources to oversight of city government.

The other reason was you. Your support means we can turn our investigative lens on powerful people attempting to abuse the system and provide New Yorkers with the news they need to navigate our city. I hope you will renew your support and make a gift of $25 to ensure THE CITY can stay on the beat.

But the Adams administration isn’t our only beat—and it’s not the only reporting that’s had an impact on the lives of New Yorkers. In a city as big, diverse, and complicated as New York, there’s always a thread to pull on.

When our story on the lack of state safety standards to protect workers from the effects of extreme heat was highlighted in Governor Hochul's State of the State book, it led the labor department to issue new guidance for employers as part of an extreme heat resource guide—a huge step in recognizing the risks faced by workers, and codifying standards to protect workers state-wide.

In July, following a series we published on predatory real estate practices targeting Black and Brown neighborhoods, lawmakers adopted important reforms that outlaw these activities. This means that New Yorkers like Mae Lee Massey will have the chance to keep her mother’s home thanks to THE CITY’s journalism.

New York State suspended the operation of its loan fund for new cannabis licensees after THE CITY exposed its predatory terms, and state legislators cited our reporting as they called for an investigation.

After we highlighted the small share of “green bond” financing flowing to New York City, Congressman Ritchie Torres called for it to be corrected. In mid-October, major new funding for NYC projects was announced.

Following reporting by THE CITY on city agencies breaking language access laws, the Mayor’s budget restored $3.8 million to a community based-program that will provide in-person interpretation services by a coalition of multilingual New Yorkers able to translate for non-English speakers.

Recently, MSNBC’s Chris Hayes said this about THE CITY: “Absolutely vital outlet for our city. I’m a supporter and if New York matters to you, urge you to support too.” Whether it’s highlighting the effects of climate change, calling out racial and economic injustice, or holding our elected officials accountable, your support allows us to dig deep on reporting that makes a difference in the lives of New Yorkers. So, stick with Chris and make your gift to THE CITY today.

Every New Yorker is part of the rich fabric that makes up our city, but thank you for being part of the community that makes up THE CITY.

With Gratitude,
