WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE SPAIN - news journal UPDATE - (en) Spain, CGT, Rojo i Negro #393: Ancestral Resistance to Colonial Genocide Let's Decolonize: October 12, Nothing to Celebrate (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

For the twelfth consecutive year, collectives and social movements are

calling for a demonstration to eradicate October 12 as a National
Holiday and to demand decolonization as a reparation process under the
slogan: Ancestral Resistance to Colonial Genocide. ---- Since the
beginning of September, more than 20 collectives, mostly migrants and
anti-racists, have met again at the Decolonize: October 12, Nothing to
Celebrate Assembly to organize ourselves in a self-managed and
non-partisan way in resistance to the hegemonic narrative of this
country that yearns for #HispaniNada and maintains a colonial memory and
collective action, even in the sectors and social movements that
consider themselves more alternative and even begin to promote
initiatives that propose to address decolonization, such as those of
some museums.
12 years ago we began to mobilize to remember that genocide is not
celebrated, that invasion is not honored, and that the "brotherhood"
between heirs of the colonial empire and the colonized peoples is not
possible without the honest recognition of history and the present, the
assumption of responsibility and the corresponding reparation. And this
includes, of course, renouncing the observance of the National Day of
the Kingdom of Spain on the same date as the beginning of colonization.
Until today, the colonial system made possible the idea of modernity,
the material, epistemic and power development of Europe, at the expense
of the bodies of racialized people, indigenous peoples and Mother Earth.
In this system lies the basis and support of the structural racism that
operates at a global level, also in our territories of origin. The EU's
own Anti-Racist Plan 2020-2025 highlights the importance of
recognizing the historical roots of structural racism, recognizing among
them colonialism and the
transatlantic slave trade.
For its part, mestizaje has been
mainly the result of the violations of indigenous and African women by white
settlers and the institutionalization of an ideology and practice for the
elimination of indigenous peoples and their cultures. The call
Let's Decolonize Ourselves, which has called us together every year
since 2012, invites us
to look at ourselves and act collectively
against this colonial legacy.
For this reason, on October 12 we are
calling again for the demonstration-parade in Madrid, this year under the
slogan: "Ancestral Resistance to the
Colonial Genocide" with the intention of
remembering that we are heirs and
recreating resistance to this colonial order. It is this resistance to
the policies of extermination that we see today
incarnated in the genocide
in Palestine, which resists
despite 75 years of occupation; in the
criminalization of indigenous peoples and black and
Afro-descendant communities that defend
their territories, such as the Mapuche People (for more than 130 years)
and the
Garifuna people; in the massacre of
entire villages in order to control the territory for the extraction
of minerals that make "civilized" life possible, as happens in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo;
in the European Pact on Migration
and Asylum, which is the most
advanced expression of the legalization and institutionalization of the
policies that
continue to make the Mediterranean the largest mass grave in the world;

even in the capitalist and extractivist
"ecological transition." Today, ancestral resistance is in the
original peoples of Abya Yala and in the Afro and
peasant communities that have managed to
maintain their worldview, their language, their culture, their spirituality
united with Mother Earth. And it is also in us, who continue to weave
networks of mutual support
of creativity, self-defense, proposals
and action in the face of the daily violence we experience when
migrating, in homes,
study centers, jobs, on the
street, in the media and
in social and political spaces,
even those in which we are
assimilated or "helped" from
a paternalism that denies our
agency and invalidates us as a political subject.
We resist by dismantling the colonial
being that inhabits us, that is reproduced in daily relationships
so often invisibly.
We resist by perreando, embracing
our corporalities, sexualities, forms of organization and spirituality.
We resist by denouncing
coloniality and racism in public policies, and by proposing
new cultural and political imaginaries and proposals. We also resist by
identifying, pointing out
and collectively dismantling the colonial logics that continue to be
repeated in organizations and, of course, in public policies in
the Kingdom of Spain and in our own territories of origin, which we
support from a distance.
In addition to the demonstration-parade called for the same
October 12, as 5 years ago, the day before, October 11, we will be in
the Columbus Genocide Gardens
(Plaza Colón) in an act of memory for the victims of historical and
current colonization. Starting with a ritual
according to the worldview of indigenous peoples and then doing a
theatrical intervention, with dance, poetry and
music from different cultures. This year a parallel will be made between
October 12, 1492 and October 7, 2023 for the colonization
and genocide of the Palestinian People,
vindicating the struggle of the peoples and their defense of the
territory and for
Mother Earth. On October 12th we will once again occupy the streets of
Madrid in a demonstration-parade scheduled to leave at 5pm from Plaza
Tirso de Molina, which will go down Calle Atocha, and will end at Plaza
Juan de Goytisolo (Museo Reina Sofia). In the same plaza, around 7pm,
the ArtEvent will take place, which will begin with the reading of the
manifesto "Let's Decolonize Ourselves, October 12th Nothing to
Celebrate" and will feature musical performances by the resistance, such
as Kamanchaca Kuntur, Los Pleneros del Exilio, drum circle and Sikuris.
In addition, there will be activities by our collectives and sister
collectives that you can learn about through our social networks (on
Instagram @descolonicemonos12octubre and on X @Descolonicemon1).
