WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FDCA, Cantiere #30 - Lebanon, humanitarian emergency - An appeal from Beirut - David Ruggini - Head of Mission of Un Ponte Per in Lebanon (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The situation in Lebanon remains very difficult and tense. ---- The

Israeli air force is constantly bombing some areas in the south of the
country, the Bekaa Valley and the southern neighborhoods of Beirut. ----
The continuous bombings and attacks, and now the ground invasion, have
affected thousands of people, including many girls and boys, and have
forced about a million people to move and displace themselves within the
country. Many have moved from the south to the north, towards Beirut and
Tripoli. They have been mainly welcomed by families, but many have also
been welcomed in shelters made available by the Ministry of Education.
The school year has not started, as you can well imagine, because the
shelters made available are schools. Depending on the size of the
schools, they welcome from 200 to 1000 people. Inside the schools, there
is a real lack of everything, from mattresses to soap and toilets, so
the humanitarian situation is dramatic.
At this time, as Un Ponte Per, together with our historic local partner,
Amel Association, we are trying to make ourselves useful and respond as
much as possible to this emergency. Through Amel we are trying to
distribute basic necessities: food, blankets and clothes for the winter,
which is now upon us here. In fact, some shelters are not located in the
city or along the coast, which has a different climate, but are in the
mountains and so the cold will not be long in coming.
From a humanitarian point of view, the situation is truly very complex
and very difficult and truly requires the action of everyone to try to
help and alleviate the suffering of these people as much as possible.
As Un Ponte Per, we have been present inside the Palestinian camps hit
by this Israeli offensive on the country. Evacuation has been requested
for the Rashidieh and Burj El-Shemali camps, in the south. As with the
villages that host these camps, all the villages south of the Litani
River have been invited to evacuate (invited in a manner of speaking, of
course). The Burj El-Barajne camp in Beirut was bombed, as was the
municipality itself, because it is part of what are considered the
southern neighborhoods of the city. Shatila, which is on the edge of
Dahieh, is self-evacuating.
Constantly during the night you can hear the bangs of bombs and
explosions, families are scared, boys and girls are scared. This creates
a huge problem because these people are fleeing, there are no places to
welcome them and the situation is slowly becoming difficult, complicated
and potentially explosive also with regards to reception.
The neighborhoods that are constantly hit, in addition to being
considered in the general narrative as Hezbollah's bastions, are also
extremely popular and extremely populous neighborhoods, where there are
not only underground military structures as is always said, but there
are also popular buildings with hundreds of families inside. They are
neighborhoods, both Dahiehche and Haret Hreik, Goberi, Burj El-Barajne,
Choueifat, Sna and others, where a large part of the Lebanese population
lives and this population was forced to evacuate from one day to the
next with just two hours to spare. Many people have lost everything,
their homes have been razed to the ground. This creates enormous damage,
constant desperation, since you can no longer ensure anything for your
family and work is already in a precarious situation.
The war is upon us, in fact it has already arrived. The situation is
truly very difficult at this time, I would like to underline its gravity
and I hope that my words will do so. I invite people who read this
message to support our "Lebanon Emergency" campaign, because this can
guarantee direct and concrete help to the people we are supporting
through local organizations that have been working with us for twenty
years, bringing food, water, medicines and hygiene kits to families who
have lost everything. Thank you.
Amel Association is a Lebanese organization active throughout the
country through 32 health centers and a system of mobile units to
guarantee medical visits, protection for women and girls and educational
activities for boys and girls.
Beit Aftal Assomoud is a Palestinian organization that operates in all
12 camps in the country, guaranteeing educational and health programs.
