Help us save Abandoned Puppies, Injured cats and untreated strays of India

Dear friends,

In the vibrant city of Kolkata, India -  a silent tragedy unfolds each day. Beneath the surface lies the heartbreaking reality of countless stray animals, many of whom suffer in silence. Dogs with untreated diseases, cats injured and abandoned, and puppies born into a life of hunger and despair—all are victims of a system that largely ignores their plight.

Animals First Aid is an IRS-designated 501(c)(3) charitable organization (tax ID# 99-1042428), with a public charity status under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). We are qualified to receive tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers, or gifts under Sections 2055, 2106, or 2522.

Susmita Mandal, a compassionate and determined woman, has taken it upon herself to rewrite this tragic narrative. Starting with nothing but her savings and an unyielding resolve, Susmita began caring for these animals, one life at a time. She founded For the Animals to formalize her mission and has since become a beacon of hope for strays in Kolkata. From nursing dogs with advanced tick fever and kidney damage to rescuing abandoned puppies too young to survive on their own, Susmita’s work has saved countless lives.

That’s why Animals First Aid, in collaboration with Susmita, is establishing a medicine bank—a crucial resource to store and distribute essential veterinary medications for strays in dire need. The medicine bank will ensure that life-saving treatments are always within reach, regardless of funding challenges or logistical delays.

For those who have supported her before, your generosity has made all the difference. Your donations have funded critical medical treatments, ensured that starving animals are fed, and allowed sterilization campaigns to take place, reducing the suffering of future generations of strays. Because of you, animals like Luna, a dog found dying on the streets with severe tick fever, have been given a second chance at life. Luna is now thriving in a loving home, a living testament to the power of compassion and care.

Despite these successes, the situation remains dire. Kolkata is home to an estimated 250,000 stray dogs, many of whom face unimaginable cruelty. In just one devastating incident, sixteen stray dogs were brutally killed outside a housing complex. Such stories are not uncommon. Diseases like pyometra, jaundice, and liver damage are rampant, and resources to treat these conditions are painfully limited. Every day, Susmita is confronted with new emergencies, from malnourished puppies to dogs hit by speeding vehicles, and yet, her ability to save them is constrained by a lack of funding.

To address the root of this crisis, Susmita, in partnership with Animals First Aid, is organizing Kolkata’s fourth Animal Welfare Festival. This magnificent event aims to inspire empathy and educate the public about the plight of stray animals. By fostering compassion, this festival hopes to create a community where animals are not only seen but valued and cared for.

But this mission cannot continue without your help. The cost of medicine, food, and sterilization efforts is overwhelming, and the festival itself requires significant support to reach its full potential. Your donation today can ensure that Susmita’s vital work continues.

Every contribution is a lifeline for an animal in need. It’s the chance to provide urgent medical care to a dog suffering from advanced disease, to feed a hungry stray for another day, or to give a vulnerable puppy the chance to grow up safe and loved.

Your continued support can make all the difference.
    •    $20: Provides life-saving medicine for a critically ill dog.
    •    $50: Feeds dozens of rescued strays for a week.
    •    $100: Funds sterilization for a female dog, preventing the birth of countless unwanted puppies.

Every dollar you give is a lifeline for an animal in need.

Recently, Susmita rescued a mother dog suffering from severe pyometra. Weak and malnourished, she could barely care for her five newborn puppies. Against all odds, Susmita nursed the mother back to health and saved her puppies, giving them the chance to grow and thrive. This family is now safe, but there are so many others waiting for their miracle.

Today, we need you again.
