scarecrow lying like a tooth puller make people believe in his rather
minimal political program which can be summed up as "Trust me!"?
Trump owes his victory in part to innovative communication, as in 2016.
He had then resorted to the illegal use of a confidential database of
Facebook users by a consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, which had
allowed him, thanks to ephemeral messages, to target voters based on
their psychological profiles and to win by 70,000 votes the 3 decisive
states for the election (US population: 323,000,000).
In 2024, the network of his ally Elon Musk, CEO of X ex-Twitter, was
opened in the name of freedom of expression to rumors and
disinformation, each more enormous than the last (such as the
responsibility of the Biden government, and not that of global warming,
for the repeated tornadoes that struck Republican-voting territories in
the southeastern United States this fall), to maintain a conspiratorial,
divisive and worrying "background noise", but promising a bright future
within reach of the vote. Access to Musk's network and his money would
be one of the keys to success.
Another is the resentment of the middle classes left behind by COVID,
who are excluded from the economic rebound, from the accelerated changes
in digital society and who find themselves in competition with newcomers.
However, Trump will face obstacles and contradictions.
The American economy and major industries are not necessarily happy
about Trump's return and are making this known, after a fleeting
euphoria, on the Wall Street stock exchange. The dissuasive customs
duties against electric cars and Chinese products in particular but also
European ones will trigger symmetrical measures in return (too bad for
Musk's Teslas!). The hunt for undocumented migrants and their expulsions
(12 million scheduled!), the wall between the USA and Mexico will pose
serious problems for economic sectors voracious for undemanding and
numerous labor forces. As for the arms industry, essential for the
economic and research and development spin-offs, and the influence it
provides internationally, Trump could well encourage the US's
traditional allies to become aware of the need for national or European
production, given the sound of boots that is becoming widespread on all
continents in response to the economic difficulties, in the face of this
Yankee isolationist shift.
Of course, the libertarian program of Trump and his ally Musk to cut all
administrations and public services and fire hundreds of thousands of
employees, risks provoking resistance at the grassroots, especially
