On November 21, the International Criminal Court (ICC) delivered its
verdict on the case of Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav
Gallant, tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Both were
convicted of starving Gaza, intentionally directing an attack against
civilians, and for the murder and persecution inflicted on the
Palestinian people. Finally! ---- This is an important decision, which
weakens Israel's position internationally. For the first time, the ICC
has ruled against Western leaders allied with American imperialism!
Despite the pressure and threats exerted by Israel on the Court for
years[1], it has recognized the crimes committed by the Zionist state.
It is regrettable, however, that the qualification of genocide was not
retained, and that the Court sentenced in the same movement Mohammed
Deif, leader of the armed wing of Hamas in Gaza, whose assassination
Israel announced in August. These simultaneous sentences continue to
spread a "falsely symmetrical image of the situation in Palestine"[2],
as if we were not facing a colonial war.
And now, what are the consequences?
From now on, the member states of the ICC, including France, are
legally obliged to arrest the convicted if they travel to their
territory. Some have announced that they will comply with their
obligations, others have questioned the decision. The United States is
not a member of the ICC, but Trump and Biden have expressed their
indignation in unison: nothing resembles a Republican genocidaire more
than a Democratic genocidaire.
In a confused press release, French diplomacy invented that Israel would
benefit from "immunity". This is of course legally absurd, but the
height of shame is reached when it assures the genocidaires of its
"close collaboration"! According to several press articles published in
the following days, this communiqué was negotiated by Israel in exchange
for its signing of the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon - a ceasefire
immediately violated by the Israeli army.
Genocides do not stop by themselves. Nor do they stop with condemnations
of leaders, however important they may be. Rafah has become a field of
ruins, famine is still ongoing in Gaza, the savagery of the Zionist army
is unleashed on Gaza, and torture and administrative condemnations are
increasing[3]. In Syria, Israel took advantage of the situation opened
by the overthrow of Assad to bomb the country, with the aim of
increasing the size of its colonies in the annexed Golan Heights.
When states are complicit, it is up to the people to rise up. It is more
urgent than ever to develop and strengthen the "Stop Arming Israel"
campaign and the BDS movement, to isolate Israel politically,
economically, diplomatically and militarily. At the same time, the fight
for the liberation of imprisoned resistance fighters is fundamental: the
campaign for the liberation of Khalida Jarrar, a Palestinian feminist
and resistance activist who has been in solitary confinement for more
than four months, and Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Palestinian resistance
activist who has been imprisoned by France for more than forty years,
are urgent for our anti-imperialist struggle.
