The image has been circulating everywhere for days: Elon Musk, arm
outstretched at the podium of a meeting on the sidelines of DonaldTrump's inauguration. A Nazi salute, in all casualness, in front of the
cameras of the entire world. But many media and political figures have
procrastinated: is it really a fascist gesture? ---- Is the angle of the
arm the right one? Is the speed of the gesture regulatory? Hesitations
that are all the more surprising since the same people were much less
cautious in other contexts. There was very little hesitation when it
came to accusing all supporters of Palestine of anti-Semitism, or
treating the strikers as hostage-takers. But when confronted with an
authentic Nazi salute, they procrastinate.
This sequence perfectly illustrates the conception of "freedom of
expression" of the right and the extreme right. We sometimes hear talk
of a "maximalist" vision of this idea, which would be that of the United
States and Elon Musk. It should be specified: maximalist for the
bourgeoisie, men, whites... In short, the oppressors, who should be able
to say anything, do anything, even the most disgusting things.
But it is also a temperature check of the rise of fascist ideas: a Nazi
salute, apparently, does not seem so shocking anymore. Another event
reminded us of this recently: the death of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Here too
the media contorted themselves to avoid saying that Le Pen was a racist,
a torturer, a misogynist and a homophobe... In short, a fascist scumbag.
The simple fact of naming things correctly ends up being an act of
resistance.
