The main world events, discussions and general attention are now focused
on the first steps of Donald Trump as the American president. So we willdedicate the episode to his person again. ---- Trump is destroying the
system? ---- In the last episode of the podcast, we already talked about
the fact that Trump is a protégé of the largest American IT business,
and has every reason to pursue a policy of fascism in the United States.
His very first decisions show that he wants to rule in the style of
Putin, or the CEO of, for example, Twitter - without limiting himself to
laws. The most striking example is his decree on depriving people of the
right to receive US citizenship based on the fact of birth inside the
country. This is a beautiful gesture for Trump voters who do not like
migrants from Latin America. Including because the migrants are
Catholics, and Trump voters are Protestants.
Migrants do not always end up in the United States legally, and their
children automatically become American citizens. Only Trump's decree
contradicts the American constitution, and has already been blocked by
the courts.
The suspension (with the prospect of complete closure) of the USAID
agency's activities has hit the Russian liberal opposition hard in
relocation - many had their grants.
USAID is an American government agency created by John Kennedy, engaged
in the propaganda of American values with the help of "soft power", was
one of the largest charitable structures in the world, operating tens of
billions of dollars.
A message appeared on the White House website that the agency's
activities were "ridiculous" and "fraudulent", although no evidence of
theft or embezzlement of this money was provided. Trump and his
associates simply did not like many of USAID's humanitarian projects:
and a huge organization was closed in one day.
Okay, many human rights organizations, media, all sorts of programs to
combat AIDS in Africa, etc. were either completely without money, or
with the prospect of very soon being left without funds. But in one day,
10 thousand US citizens working for USAID lost their jobs, and they have
already gone to American courts.
Anarchists have always been very skeptical about representative
democracy, and now we will observe an interesting experiment. After all,
the USA is not Putin's Russian Federation. Different opinions are
expressed in both houses of parliament, battles are unfolding, not all
votes are predictable. There is a complex balance of powers between the
federal government, states and local governments. There are more than
half a million elected positions in the USA.
And soon we will see whether this whole system is worth something, or
whether it is as easy to establish a personalist regime there, or as
easy as it was for Putin - in the tortured Russia of the early 2000s.
Peace to the world?
During Biden's term, an off-scale number of wars were waged around the
world. Trump promised to end them. Including the Russian-Ukrainian war -
in one day. Now they are already talking about 100 days, but there are
still no specifics. At the same time, the harm from Trump's actions is
already evident: if earlier Putin was clearly a "bad guy", now, in the
rhetoric of Trump and his associates, Putin and Zelensky simply got
confused, succumbed to the provocations of the insidious Biden and
unleashed an absurd war.
Previously, the whole world condemned Putin because he went with tanks
into a foreign country. And Trump himself allows such (for now)
statements about Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal - so the
boundaries of adequacy are very blurred.
Trump says: look, I will propose a peace plan, and if Putin does not
agree to it, we will increase sanctions by an order of magnitude, and
then Russia will be finished. If this is not a bluff, and there is still
room to increase the pressure of sanctions...
Then the question is to Biden and the leaders of the European Union: why
hasn't this been done yet? What else did you expect? That Putin would
repent and get out of Ukraine? Why, for example, were sanctions against
Russia's shadow fleet transporting oil introduced only at the very end
of Biden's rule?
The situation around the Gaza Strip is interesting. The Israeli
military, far from internationalism, humanism and sympathy for the
Palestinians, said back in the spring of 2024 that the war in Gaza
should be curtailed. Hamas cannot be destroyed by purely military methods.
The conclusion of a truce with Hamas was blocked by the ultra-right
maniacs who are part of the coalition with Netanyahu. They advocate for
the expulsion of Arabs from the territories surrounding Israel, and they
are in the overwhelming minority among Israelis. But if they leave the
coalition with Netanyahu, his government will fall, and now it is
unlikely that he will be re-elected. Accordingly, Netanyahu delayed this
decision, civilians and Israeli soldiers were dying in Gaza...
It is a mystery why Biden lacked the will/desire/leverage. Why didn't he
slap Netanyahu on the back of the head and force him to sign a truce in
the spring or summer of 2024. And Trump in January 2025 - forced him to
sign exactly the same as was discussed six months ago.
It makes me angry to realize that if a truce had been concluded in Gaza
in the summer, there would not have been a war between Israel and
Lebanon in the fall of 2024. The author of this podcast episode
previously described his 2 months under Hezbollah fire - it's a really
bad life experience that would be a shame to do without.
But now Trump has once again turned the Middle East into a powder keg -
with his idea of resettling Gazans. Although Trump's motives are
different from the aspirations of the Israeli right.
As a result of the war, 92% of buildings in Gaza have been damaged. By
all estimates, clearing the ruins and building new houses will take
years, Trump says 10-15 years. It is still unclear what to do with the
hundreds of kilometers of underground utilities dug by Hamas: there is a
chance that with serious new construction they will begin to subside,
and Gaza will turn into a giant ravine.
The presence of about 2 million unfortunate people in tents on this
piece of land (several times smaller than Moscow), most of whom have
lost all their property, is not the most convenient condition for a
gigantic construction site. But even Trump's good intentions, expressed
in a commanding tone and without taking into account the specifics of
the situation, led to anger and surprise throughout the Middle East.
There is a good word in Hebrew - "balagan", which means it is
approximately the same as in Russian. The circus that Trump is
organizing from Greenland to Gaza is a good test for all of humanity.
Perhaps, through opposition to Trump, an impetus will be born for the
creation of new, truly democratic international structures independent
of autocracies and imperialists.
