Abandoned and Wounded. Soshanguve is all they have. Will you be their hope? |
In the sprawling township of Soshanguve, where stray animals weave between cars and homes with no doors, one group continues to show up—every single time. Our longtime partners on the ground have been working around the clock to answer distress calls, rescue the injured, feed the starving, and comfort the terrified. They do this in a community where animal welfare receives no formal support and compassion is often the only thing standing between life and death. |

Every Call They Answer Is a Life Saved |
Some time ago, they received a heartbreaking call from a passerby at the local cemetery. A puppy had been spotted limping through the tombstones, frightened and alone. When the team arrived, they found a small pup with a leg that had been severed—likely due to an old injury that was never treated. She was in immense pain, but her will to live hadn’t been broken. They named her Lexy. |
Lexy was rushed to the vet where it was confirmed that the injury was weeks old. She had managed to survive without any medical help. The leg will eventually need to be amputated as it grows too heavy for her small frame. Yet despite everything, Lexy is now full of energy, running around and spreading joy wherever she goes. This little warrior has captured all our hearts—and she reminds us why we do this. |

Not long after Lexy’s case, another call came in—this time from an informal settlement on the edge of Soshanguve. A dog was roaming the dusty streets, disoriented and defeated. Without hesitation, the team went to find him. He was thin, visibly distressed, and unsure whether he should trust the hands reaching out to help.
Thanks to a kind resident who had spotted him and alerted the team, the dog was gently rescued and taken back to the shelter. There, he found his first safe space—food, warmth, and affection he likely hadn’t experienced in a long time. These types of rescues are the reality in Soshanguve. The animals aren’t just neglected—they’re invisible. |

Overflowing with Love, But Also with Need |
The shelter in Soshanguve is beyond capacity. When a severely malnourished pitbull was recently rescued, the team hoped a community member who initially offered to foster would be able to help. Sadly, they didn’t have the means to care for the dog. It was a painful but responsible decision to surrender him back to the team. Now, he waits—hopeful, but without a place to truly call home. Every kennel is full. Every vet bill is rising. And every day, the calls for help continue to pour in. |

Why We Continue to Stand with Soshanguve |
At Animals First Aid, we believe in showing up—especially where others won’t. That’s why we’ve stood beside the team in Soshanguve for years. We’ve witnessed their tireless efforts, their sleepless nights, their sacrifices. They are proof that true heroes don’t wear capes—they drive battered vans, cradle shaking puppies, and cry in silence when they lose a life they fought so hard to save. And we stand with them still, because without people like them, the animals of Soshanguve would have nothing. No food. No shelter. No voice. |

R150 ($8) buys a bag of food. R800 ($42) covers vet treatment. R2000 ($105) helps an injured animal make a full recovery. Whatever you can give—no matter the amount—brings hope.
