First, a little history: on August 20, 1940, Vichy France sent its first
train of deportees to Nazi Germany. These were Spanish Republicansconsidered enemies of the Reich because they were "Reds." Gradually,
some 7,300 of these Spanish Republicans were interned in the Mauthausen
and Gusen camps in Austria. Abuses, torture, and gas chambers ensured
that only 2,000 of them emerged alive from this hell when the camps were
liberated by the Allied forces on May 5, 1945. That was 80 years ago,
and this year, the commemoration of this liberation has taken a rather
incongruous turn. Despite the request of the Association for Historical
Recovery, which "urged the Spanish royal couple not to attend this
ceremony," Felipe VI, his wife Letizia, and some representatives of the
Spanish socialist government were still there to represent Spain. A
somewhat surreal spectacle, depicting a king welcomed with cries of
"Long live the Republic" and "Spain tomorrow will be republican," and
surrounded by the flags of the Spanish Republic.
The monarch cracked the following statement: "We remember in a special
way the thousands of Spanish republicans who fought against Nazism and
for freedom." Well, he could have added that they had also previously
fought against Franco, the very man who, before his death, had initiated
the process to restore the monarchy in Spain. So, was Felipe VI's
presence a PR stunt or a political recovery? Both, of course. And
meanwhile, the far right is baring its teeth across the Pyrenees to
attack everything "Red."
The king's abdication? That's not really on the agenda. Not yet.
