WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL AL #360 - Antipatriarchy - Pride Month 2025: A Fight More Necessary Than Ever (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Every year, June marks Pride Month: a strategic period of visibility,
celebration, but above all, of political construction and the fight for
LGBTI rights. Marked by profound contrasts between symbolic advances and
worrying setbacks, the year 2025 demands unwavering mobilization from
our entire social spectrum. Across Europe and the United States, attacks
against LGBTI people are intensifying. By declaring that "there are only
two genders: male and female," Trump set the tone for this new term, a
veritable crusade against what he calls "transgender delusions." His
positions are relayed and amplified by the watchdogs of surveillance
capitalism, led by Musk and Zuckerberg. By tearing down all moderation
rules on their platforms in the name of freedom of expression, they are
providing fertile ground for the proliferation of hate speech and
targeted attacks against our communities. They are immensely responsible
for the ongoing fascistization and the dramatic decline of our rights.
This shift also has repercussions for the organization of liberal pride
marches, whose corporate sponsors have announced they are withdrawing
their support in favor of the new conservative winds of capitalism.

As we go to press, the United Kingdom's Supreme Court has just ruled to
exclude trans women from the legal definition of the term "woman," a
decision taken following intense pressure from transphobic lobbies. In
Hungary, the parliament adopted a law in March by a large majority
outright banning Pride marches. Participants now face a hefty fine,
while the police will be able to identify those present using facial
recognition tools. This is a turning point in the criminalization of
LGBTI people, which heralds a toughening of policies in other European
countries-starting with France-if the National Rally (RN) were to come
to power, given its well-known ties to Viktor Orbán.

Indeed, the French political and media climate is also hardening. The
trivialization of the most odious rhetoric, driven in particular by the
rise of the RN, contributes to the normalization of transphobia and
gender-based violence. The media coverage of the transphobic attack on
March 13th is a chilling example: the media unanimously relayed a
narrative tinged with voyeurism, minimizing the violence suffered and
criminalizing trans people. This reactionary shift is also evident in
national education, where the notion of transphobia has been ousted from
the new curriculum for education on emotional and relationship issues
and sexuality.

LGBTI people, alongside women, people of color, exiled people, and
people with disabilities, once again find themselves on the front lines
facing authoritarian, security-related, and patriarchal policies.

Resistance is Organizing
Despite this harmful context, progress is being made. In January 2025,
Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize marriage
for all. In Europe, debates are beginning in Greece, the Czech Republic,
and Montenegro on new rights for LGBTI people.

And popular backlash is growing against security-related and repressive
laws: in Hungary, more than 10,000 people demonstrated in the capital on
April 1st to denounce the ban on Pride marches. This massive
mobilization sends a clear message: despite the repression, Budapest
Pride, which is celebrating its 30th edition this year, will indeed take
place! In Argentina, Carnival has transformed into a day of massive
LGBTI mobilization in response to Javier Milei's latest transphobic
measures.

In France, solidarity initiatives are emerging from the grassroots: the
recent fundraising campaign for the Trans Solidarity Organization (OST)
raised over EUR56,000 - 113% of the initial goal. This victory
illustrates the strength of the activist community and the urgency of
supporting trans struggles.

Pride Month cannot be simply a festive occasion. It must be a time for
the convergence of struggles, for aggressive demands, and for political
response. Marches are planned throughout France for June - in major
cities and rural areas alike. Rural pride parades have become emerging
levers for raising awareness of LGBTI rights in places where our
existence is still often ignored, even denied.

But beyond visibility, we must mount a political counteroffensive. It's
not simply a matter of defending threatened rights, but of asserting our
demands with strength and pride. We cannot ignore the dangers
manifesting themselves in the streets and at the highest levels of
government. The unity of our social class is vital to confront them. In
this month of June 2025, let us fly the flag for our struggles. Let us
build massive, radical, and political pride parades. Let us reject
defensive withdrawal and counterattack! Let us assert our presence, our
dignity, our right to live fully!
