THE LABORATORY OF ANARCHY -- Errico Malatesta's experiments with
revolution 1889-1900 -- Davide Turcato -- pp368 EUR 15.00 -- ISBN
798-88-95950-85-3 -- NEW RELEASE - Edizioni ZIC -- This book is
dedicated to those who want to understand anarchism.
Many historians of this movement are emulators of that policeman,
described by Edgar Allan Poe, who called "bizarre" anything that escaped
his understanding, and so "lived in the midst of an infinite legion of
'bizarres'". They too live happily in the midst of the legion of bizarre
things they attribute to anarchism - purism, utopianism, impossibilism,
and so on. The author of this book is instead inspired by the antithesis
of that policeman, Auguste Dupin. Just as Poe's detective uses coherence
as a heuristic principle to dissolve the apparent oddities of the cases
he deals with, so Turcato is guided by the methodological principle of
granting anarchists the benefit of common sense to investigate the
possibility of interpreting anarchism as a sensible and rational action
strategy.

The intent is pursued by studying the thought and action of one of the
most lucid representatives of anarchism, Errico Malatesta, in the
central years of his life. In contrast to the stereotype of anarchism as
a vacuous longing for an idyllic dream of perfection, the central theme
of his anarchism is the concept of method. For Malatesta, it is not so
much the ultimate goal that differentiates political movements, but
their method, because "in sociology, as in topography, one does not go
where one wants to go, but where the road on which one has set out
leads." The anarchist method, both in today's struggles and in
tomorrow's society, is the "method of freedom": the common good cannot
arise from a "moralizing" state that imposes it with force and fear, but
from the blossoming of a plurality of social experiments guided by the
beacon of solidarity. The anarchist conception is therefore "the
experimental system brought from the field of research to that of social
achievements".

At the root of the Malatesta idea that social problems are solved only
gradually and experimentally is the acute awareness of themes that would
become daily bread in twentieth-century sociology. And the libertarian
practices of Malatesta and of that networked and transnational movement
of which he was a part constituted as many experiments with revolution,
full of lessons for those who have not lost the desire to pursue the
collective good.
