The new volume in the beautiful collection Le peuple du livre from
L'Échappée Editions usefully expands our knowledge of the world of booksby publishing the memoirs of Maximilien Vox. His name is a pseudonym;
Maximilien Vox's real name is Samuel Monod. He was born in 1894 into a
Protestant family. He began as a press cartoonist before becoming a
graphic designer for Grasset Publishing in the 1920s. He is responsible
for several cover logos that still exist today, such as those for Le
Masque and Larousse. He quickly streamlined his graphic inventions by
creating a classification code for typographic characters called
"VOX-AtypI" (for the International Typographic Association). Passionate
about the search for new layouts and new typefaces, Vox did not forget
the men involved. He joined the Resistance in 1943 alongside Albert
Camus and Maurice Clavel in the Combat network. After the war, he
returned to his original profession but literally promoted typography by
organizing international meetings on the subject. An eclectic man, he
was also passionate about Chesterton, Napoleon, poetry, and science
fiction, and wrote numerous reference works on typography until his
death in 1974.
Unlike the code he created, his memoirs are often disjointed and jump
from one theme to another without much expectation. Fortunately, the
editors had the excellent idea of adding supplements: a critical
apparatus, a chronology, and a bibliography that make it easy to
navigate... The book, fascinating for its anecdotes about the publishing
world, is just as fascinating for its analysis of the graphic design as
for the character's colorful side. The editors also pay a fitting
tribute to this creative genius by producing a book that is intended as
a nod to typographic innovation.
